Royalteen Ending Explained: What Happened to Margrethe in the End?

Royalteen is a young-adult drama movie directed by Per-Olav Sørensen and Emilie Beck and stars Ines Høysæter Asserson, Mathias Storhøi and Elli Müller Osborne, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 107 minutes and is based on the book by Randi Fuglehaug and Anne Gunn Halvorsen, titled Arvingen.

Netflix describes the movie as:

A TEENAGER STRUGGLES TO KEEP HER SCANDAL-RIDDEN PAST AND A BIG SECRET FROM GETTING OUT WHEN SHE STRIKES UP AN UNLIKELY ROMANCE WITH THE CROWN PRINCE.

Royalteen, the royal love story between two teens, juggles several storylines to bring forth the struggles of being a teenager going through life and, on top of that, being a mom. There’s romance and discussions on mental health and responsibility, but unfortunately, since it juggles so many things, it doesn’t really hone in on one subject and jumps from one to the next.

Plus, for our protagonist Lena, things get solved a bit too easily. However, what’s with that ending? What happened to Margarethe in the end?

Royalteen Ending Explained

Although we really don’t get to know what exactly happens to Margrethe, I think it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe that Margrethe has been the one who constantly thought about her family and kept up appearances for the sake of them. She can be mean-spirited, like the way she spoke to Lena throughout the runtime of Royalteen makes her out to be rather “not nice”.

However, it is important to note that at one point, Margrethe mentions that since her mother isn’t well, the rest of the royal family needs to be on their best behaviour, no matter what. They cannot end up doing something that would make news and ruin the reputation of the family more. It’s clear that she’s the responsible one of the two siblings, albeit a bit stuck-up. It’s not like Karl isn’t responsible, but he’s the more laid back of the two and also wants to live his life – he thus falls for Lena without a second thought but won’t have sex with her for fear of her getting pregnant (and other things).

Royalteen Ending Explained

Thus, in the end, when Margrethe sees Lena and Karl together in spite of her warning the former to stay away from her brother, her illusion and need to control her family’s future crumbles, and she (probably) has a panic attack. Let’s note that the queen is supposed to have anxiety and some other mental health issues that we don’t exactly get into, so it’s not too far-fetched to wonder whether Margrethe inherited these illnesses from her mother.

There’s also the issue that, in spite of her thinking of her family and its reputation so much, Margrethe is always lost in the shadows thanks to the light shining on Karl since he’s the heir to the throne. There might be some jealousy issues there as well, and much like what the rest of the movie tells us, it proves in its ending once again that we don’t really know what is going on in people’s lives. We can only speculate until the truth comes out.

However, what’s for certain is that Karl and Lena make up after he gets to know the truth about her son from her Instagram post. But does he know about the bullying she subjected her friend to? Sure, the friend also cheated and all that, but cheating on your spouse and posting revenge porn for petty reasons are very different things. Will their relationship stand the test of time after he realizes the depth of Lena’s past?

I guess we’ll have to wait for the sequel because, at this point, it’s almost certain they are going to release another part of this.

Royalteen is streaming on Netflix.
