Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 5 Overview

Mushoku Tensei, also known as Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation or Mushoku Tensei Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu in original Japanese, is an adventure, drama and fantasy anime based on a light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Sirotaka. Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 5 Review- Ranoa University of Magic

As the dawn of the new day emerges, Rudeus and Elinalise find themselves in Ranoa, the fruit of so much hard work and growth. This legitimately feels like a full-circle moment for Rudeus, as he originally went to Eris’ place for the first time in order to get enough money to make it to this school alongside his only friend at the time, Sylphiette. Fate has brought him here, but in a delightful twist of irony, already waiting for him here is Sylphiette. Well, not Sylphiette, but Fitz, the alter-ego she took to protect the princess.

Despite the way this season started, it can all be forgiven since it brought Rudeus to this place, a location which is so full of possibilities that it is surprising we only got here so deep into the story. A lesser show would have seen Rudeus and Sylphiette sent to Ranoa right when Rudeus first asked to come here. It is great that they didn’t because not only did we see the development of Rudeus from a mere child to a teen who is capable of looking past his actual past as a NEET, even if he is still plagued by his decisions there.

It hopefully gave Sylphiette her own time to grow and learn in the absence of Rudeus to teach her. They both clearly lived very different kinds of lives, as the show established very well in their first meeting with Rudeus showcasing his years of adventuring and how resourceful it has made him. He could see Sylphiette having more potential than him earlier, but right now, the difference between them does a good job of demonstrating how different Rudy would have been had he come to Ranoa back then.

There was a lot of worldbuilding done in this one episode, which has been a trend in the show, but it felt meaningful for the first time after a long while. For the first time, it feels like we are going to spend a lot of time in a single place, which is certainly a huge change from the show’s overall nomadic nature that we have seen so far. The change comes very welcome, as Rudeus’ usual adventures have felt extremely stale for quite a while now, contributing to the overall decrease in quality seen at the start of this season. Just adding depression doesn’t mean that Rudy isn’t doing the same thing repeatedly.

Rudeus’ mentality also feels far less downtrodden in this episode, even though he showcases himself to be remarkably forgetful in this episode. While Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 5 mainly served as an introduction point to a location for which the series clearly has a lot of plans, it did a great job of introducing soon-to-be relevant characters naturally, and even a few old ones that we already know. The series now feels like it has returned to its roots, and it is great to see it feeling this fresh again.
Verdict
Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 5 felt like a breath of fresh air as the show put its best foot forward in what is a new start for the series. We are back with familiar people on unfamiliar grounds, where the show is at its strongest.
