Pro Bono Episode 9 Recap

The man who conned David, Jae-bum, comes to meet Gi-ppeum out of nowhere, creating a ruckus. She becomes very vocal about her displeasure with him and even reprimands him for doing something so heinous to David. However, instead of saying sorry, he tells her to handle his case and see for herself how David had betrayed him. He leaves stacks of papers for her so that she can understand his father’s case better and dig through everything. According to him, David had deliberately destroyed his father’s life by charging him with something he was not guilty of. Gi-ppeum decides to read his case so that she can get to the bottom of David’s situation.

On the other hand, David talks to Gyu-jang, and he is nothing but praise. He congratulates David for bringing a star client like Elijah. He also says that he will not be disbanding the pro bono team, and this makes his own daughter, Jung-in, suspicious of him. She can not understand why her father is so happy when, in reality, he is a manipulative man. After going through the files, Gi-ppeum calls for a pro bono team meeting without David and shows them all the evidence that she got from the man.

We get a detailed scenario of the case where David utilised his powers to punish the CEO and not someone working for him for a fire that broke out in the factory. David used his position, and the pro bono team thinks that he did this because of unfair intentions. All of them believe in the end that it was a manipulated trial orchestrated entirely by David. Gi-ppeum tells David how she got this case and confronts him, to which he does not react very calmly. When Gi-ppeum asks him about his side of the story, he goes straight to Jae-bum to understand why he is doing this.

We get to see that there is bad blood between David and Jae-bum’s father, which might be the reason why he was so harsh on his trial. However, we also see that Gyu-jang is the one who is trying his best to completely destroy David, for reasons completely unknown. This also puts Jung-in in a very bad position, as everyone in her company expects her to step down as a CEO, for bringing David in. Later, it also becomes apparent that Gyu-jang absolutely hates David because he goes to the pro bono team to kind of order them to take the case against David.

David finally goes to judge Shin and directly tells him how he knows he’s the one who betrayed him. He openly challenges him, but is internally unsure how he will handle everything. On the other hand, it is also difficult for Gi-ppeum, who has always believed in David, but she has her own troubles following her.

This episode was brilliant because it definitely makes you feel anxious along with David. Right now, there is no one in his team who will actually believe in him, and maybe they are right in doing so. In the next episode, we will get to see whether David is actually the culprit everybody thinks he is, or if it is just a big misunderstanding.
