At a recent press event for the movie Ponniyin Selvan 2, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan expressed her feelings about playing the role of her popular namesake character Nandini again after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Last seen in the first part of the epic period drama as Nandini the Queen of Pazhuvoor, the character has come a full circle.
The actress shared that her character in the 1999 musical romance drama was very memorable. The character has lived on in people’s hearts and she is truly thankful to play Nandini, which has remained equally special to her. She also mentions the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and she is happy to be able to play the namesake again in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan series.
She further commented that it is a tremendous blessing to play such a strong, layered woman with a character that touches the lives of so many other women out there. The film also starred Salman Khan & Ajay Devgn in the lead roles.

Continuing her role in Ponniyin Selvan 2, which is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name. The story followed the power struggle during the Chola rule between ADs 900 and 950. The three main points of the plot were the ruler Sundara Chola and his sons Adithya Karikalan and Arulmozhivarman. The conspiracies and the struggle for power between the main characters and those around them form the basis of the film. It essentially tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman, who would become the Chola emperor Rajaraja I.

The second part will pick up from where the first movie ended, as we saw Aditha Karikalan heading to Thanjavur to destroy Nandini while Oomai Rani, her lookalike, swims in the sea to rescue Ponniyin Selvan. Playing the dual role, the character of Nandini falls into the grey area with her teaming up to kill Karikalan with the help of the Pandiyas. Even in the trailer, we see both characters facing each other in the last scenes, as rage and revenge are evident from their expressions.
