– Our Beloved Summer episode 1 recap contains major spoilers –

In May, 2011, Choi Ung is in class and is being filmed. He’s bored and his inability to get along with his neighbour, Kook Yeon-su gets them into a verbal spat that results in them both throwing insults at each other. Coi Ung and Yeon-su are as opposite as they get – she’s the serious, studious type while he’s uninterested in all that. Well, she comes first and he comes last, so that’s how different they are.

Ung is uninterested in the documentary, since he has to sit with Yeon-su, and she is equally annoyed by his presence since he really is quite fussy. Anyway, they have to spend all their time together thanks to the documentary and it’s hilarious to see them try to coexist. Somehow, these two remind me of two people who could’ve been Hye-jin and Du-sik (from Hometown Cha Cha Cha) in school.

Anyway, we jump to the present where Yeon-su seems to be bored of her job and tired of being looked down on. Although she does get to have the last word here there’s a problem – she has to get Artist Ko-o on board to snag the contract.

We then jump to the past in Our Beloved Summer episode 1 where we see Ung’s relationship with Ji-ung, his friend from when they were in school. The series jumps back and forth here and come back Yeon-su’s colleagues talking about what would happen if they lose the contract. When she comes back in, they all start researching on Ko-o and Yeon-su starts to go through his artwork, from where we go to meet Ung.

Yes, for those who were in the unawares, Ung is Artist Ko-o and he seems to be living the life he wanted to – free and happy. He spends some time with his friends, kinda forcefully, and deep down he’s still the same kids from all those years ago. Meanwhile, Yeon-su has apparently bailed on a date four times and her friend laments that she cannot live her life like this anymore. That her life must have something more than work and home.

It is next revealed in Our Beloved Summer episode 1 that Ji-ung works for the guys who had previously made the original documentary. His boss tasks him with the work of recreating the documentary from all those years ago… which includes his friend. Yeon-su’s colleagues find the videos on YouTube as well which creates an award moment in the office.

In an awkward moment, Mr Kang meets Yeon-su and realise that they are both wearing the same shirt. She is there for that date she’s been avoiding who insults her to hell and back and then leaves. She asks Mr Kang to keep everything that he heard to himself and then asks him whether she can sit with him. The fact that they are both wearing the same shirt is insanely hilarious.

The next morning, in Our Beloved Summer episode 1, Ung opens his door to find Yeon-su standing there and both of them are unhappy with the fact that they have met again. We get to know from Ji-ung that the two had dated for five years and had a nasty breakup.

The last scene is of Ung spraying water randomly on Yeon-su’s face. We then go back to the past when Yeon-su had broken up with Ung.

Also:

Choi Ung is left shocked when the very famous NJ decides to give his studio a visit. However, later on, she is unable to come due to heavy rains delaying her shoot.

Final Thoughts: Our Beloved Summer episode 1

Our Beloved Summer is seriously giving me Hometown Cha Cha Cha vibes and it feels like this is going to be a heartwarming ride. The two bickering together is quite funny and doesn’t get annoying, surprisingly. I love how dreamy and flowy the cinematography is and the leads seem to have good chemistry. I am so excited to see where the story goes because I have this feeling that they are going to fall in love all over again (duh).

Our Beloved Summer is streaming on Netflix.
