Newtopia Episode 4 Recap

The episode starts with a look back at Jae-yoon and Young-joo’s college days. Young-joo was the only girl in a class full of boys and was the subject of everyone’s crush. However, Jae-yoon was apathetic to her charms, although it’s clear that she had a crush on him. Unfortunately, the crush doesn’t come to fruition at first but Young-joo finds her feelings soaring the more she spends time with him. Eventually, she is unable to take his rejections anymore and breaks down in the middle of their shift. Back in the present, she remembers how he had shown her how to tie her shoes so that they wouldn’t come undone easily and reminisces about them as she ties her shoes.

Meanwhile, at the military base, the soldiers are left dumbfounded when they see Hyung-bae coming back to “life”. As the others flounder, wondering what to do, Jae-yoon tries to kill him before he kills someone else. However, in the end, Soo-jeong deals the deadly blow. Meanwhile, Yoon-jae and her gang come across Tripeater, who has been bitten by a zombie but hasn’t turned yet. After interacting with him for some time, Tae-sik comes to the conclusion that the zombies might not be targeting drunks or that being drunk might save them from turning into zombies.

The next morning, as Jae-yoon gets completely sloshed, Sung-wook, on top of Eden Hotel, shoots himself when he realises that he is turning into a zombie. Seargent Jung is left traumatised after finding his body and almost ends his own life, but is stopped by In-ho and Jae-yoon, who decide to leave the base to find their loved ones. However, their plan fails when they learn that a supply chopper is on its way. On the streets, a drunk Young-joo goes out in the streets and starts to make a ton of noise alerting all the zombies around them. Thankfully, Tripeater saves them from turning into a zombie’s meal.

The last scene showcases the Tower 77A Outpost members giddily welcoming the helicopter, but is it the boon that it promises to be?

Newopia Episode 4 Review

Newtopia Episode 4 is a more emotional watch showcasing the hardships of people in a time of crisis, especially members of the military. Sergeant Jung’s heartbreak at many of his juniors dying horrible deaths is truly a sad affair and in spite of the humorous undertones, the sequence of him crying as he tries to end his life truly makes your heart hurt. The past sequences with Jae-yoon and Young-joo are cute but there’s nothing really happening in the series that warrants an hour-long runtime.
