In the first four episodes of Disney+ K-drama Light Shop, something eerie is afoot around Jung Won-young’s brilliantly lit shop that seems to only operate at night. The mysterious shopkeeper seems to lure in some very interesting people from near and far but what’s the truth behind it all?

Light Shop Episode 5 Recap

The episode starts with all the characters from the first four episodes going about their daily routine as they get ready to get on the bus. The episode, titled Reunion, shows Oh Seung-won showing concern about a wonky tyre on the bus but is informed that he will have to pay for repairs himself if she gets it checked anywhere other than the garage mechanic shop. Those who get on the bus are Kim Hyun-min, Park Hye-won, Joo Hyun-ju, Jung Yoo-hee and Heo Ji-woong, along with others.

After getting all of our characters on board, the bus eventually gets into a horrible accident in the midst of a horrifying downpour and skids off the bridge. Hyun-min’s girlfriend, Lee Ji-young, witnesses the accident, but she is unable to tell the emergency operator and rushes to the scene of the tragedy. Everyone is eventually taken to the hospital where Young-ji works and Ji-young follows them there, hoping to find Hyun-min. The other heartbroken relatives also wait for news on their loved ones and it’s a tragic scene as one by one the victims are taken out of the emergency room.

After everyone is brought out, Hyun-min’s mother texts Ji-young that he has died, although it turns out that he is still alive. Overcome by grief, she decides to take her own life just as his father decides to tell her the real truth. Unfortunately, it’s too late for her and as the texts come flooding in, she fights to take the rope off around her neck but is unable to do so.

Before the end credits roll, we are told that those who have near-death experiences often talk about seeing a dark tunnel before they wake up. They also talk about reuniting with a loved one while they were unconscious and we see the different characters meeting their loved departed ones and embracing them.

Listen, I wasn’t hoping to be scared by this series but I definitely wasn’t hoping to be overcome by emotions either. Episode 6 is a predictable yet well-crafted series that fills your heart with a flurry of emotions. Knowing what lies ahead probably makes it harder to watch because it’s inevitable – especially when some people survive and some don’t. The heartbreak of watching some people being brought out dead while others are alive must be a tragic thing to witness for those hoping and praying for their loved ones to be alive and it’s a hell I wish on no one. The series captures this feeling so well, ending with an unnecessary tragedy that could’ve been avoided.

All in all, this episode, although not scary, is mesmerising to watch in spite of the tragic deaths. The fact that the series creates such vivid characters in such a short runtime is truly unique and magical and leaves an impression on you when the end credits roll.
