Disney+ brings another exciting horror-mystery show to the platform with Light Shop right after Gangnam B-Side. The series focuses on a group of strangers, all going through a rough phase in their lives, and suddenly coming across a light shop at the end of a dingy alley that curiously contains the answers to their pasts, presents and futures.

The series is based on the webtoon Light Shop by Kang Full and has 8 episodes. The first 4 episodes dropped on Disney+ on 4 December 2024.

Light Shop Review

There is no denying the fact that Disney+ has started something magnetic with its latest horror-mystery series Light Shop. It is not always I am this intrigued by a TV show but this one, with only 4 episodes out and 4 more to go will leave viewers absolutely thrilled from the start. The series focuses on different stories in each episode, but every story told is intertwined with one another to create something truly surprising. Although the first four episodes don’t really give up a wrapped-up story yet, it definitely does create an atmosphere that is hard to stop watching.

As mentioned previously, every episode consists of one particular story that is connected to the larger tapestry. Each other these stories, although starting off slow, the build-up turns out to be delicious, resulting in a payoff that is either terrifying or highly intriguing. There’s something afoot in the series that will make you wait for answers, but those are hard to come by, at least for the time being. Light Shop showcases several souls who are walking around the earth presumably to find the light but that’s not an easy feat. I think, however, the story won’t be as easy as we might make it out to be.

All 4 episodes follow a somewhat similar path; however, the way the story is staged and the pacing is fantastic and with excellent cinematography and a tense atmosphere, it is almost impossible for things to not feel eerie. I didn’t find it particularly scary, but I would be lying if I said that I didn’t sometimes get goosebumps. There were also several moments when the series took me by surprise and the twists made my jaw drip. The series, till now, is able to take me by surprise and I can’t wait to see what is in store in the rest of the episodes. It’s quite certain that there will be a finite end to the story, or maybe we will be left thoroughly surprised with an open end.

Consisting of a talented cast of extremely talented people, the series gives us everything we want and more from other shows of the genre. Ju Ji-hoon plays the mysterious owner of the light shop and although we get a glimpse that he might have something more than meets the eye, it will be interesting to see the mystery unfold. By the fourth episode, most viewers might be able to figure out what the story might be but I can’t help but feel intrigued for any upcoming twists and turns. The rest of the cast plays the different people who come to the shop and bring forth different characters who will leave you stumped by the end of the episode.

Light Shop on Disney+ might just be a hit – its storytelling, atmosphere, cinematography and performances are excellent and will leave you hooked for the duration of its runtime. Every episode starts with some new story and although the stories aren’t particularly scary, it’s the way they are told that leave an impression. This one definitely deserved a watch!
