Insomniacs After School Episode 2 Review- Caught In The Act

Magari Nakami Insomniacs After School Episode 2

It was somewhat hard to make what the show was going to be like when the first episode ended. It had started off with the tale of death, only to morph from there into just a normal slice of life with no supernatural or even sad elements to prop it up. It was just a very human story of two teenagers who share the same debilitating problem which they can’t share with the world. It was an okay concept, but it didn’t appear to be one with the greatest potential. However, it did lay the foundations for the show’s true strength- its main characters.

Magari and Nagami are both so much more than one would assume at the start of the series. They have got a lot of nuance to them, and very minute details about their characters have been put down with great effort for the audience to notice. The way Nagami messaged Kagari at the start of Insomniacs After School Episode 2 was very true to his character. It feels odd saying this after just having watched two episodes of this show. The characters feel closer to each other and to the viewer in two episodes than some shows manage during their entire runtime, which is certainly something.

Insomniacs After School Episode 2 was also able to answer “Where is this show going” with a lot of success. Towards the end of this episode, what the show is going to be about is very clear, and it is a direction I am very excited about. The astronomy club deserves more than to be remembered as a place where somebody jumped to their death, especially with how that rumour came to be spread anyways. The duo will be as good for the club as good as the club has been to them.

The worldbuilding for this series is also going well, even if many things are yet to be explored. The direction is the only thing that matters this early in the game, and that part is solid and has a great foundation. We also have already met two great and helpful characters so far, Ukegawa in the previous episode and their teacher, Kurashiki, in this one. Hell, there is also an extremely cute cat here, and you already know that the cat is going to steal the show away from all of these characters. That’s not to say that these characters are bad, far from it. The cat is just that cute.

The animation style of the show fits the tone very well, and Insomniacs After School Episode 2 was also directed very well. The director knew exactly which parts of the show to highlight which amazing detail and which ones could be left bare for comedic reasons. Studio Lidenfilms have been doing right by this show, and I have full confidence in their ability to do justice to a heartfelt slice-of-life show like this one. If your mind is asking why, just open Netflix up and watch Kotaro Lives Alone. You’ll thank me later.

Verdict

Insomniacs After School Episode 2 was a fantastic follow-up to the pilot episode and managed to set very strong foundations for the show’s future. This looks to be a very high-quality offering.
