Muthu Alias Kaattaan Review

In JioHotstar’s newest Tamil series, an enigmatic Vijay Sethupathi keeps us hooked to the screen as the bumbling police officers of a small village try to figure out who could’ve killed him. The story’s premise discusses how one man could be seen in many different lights in different circumstances, and creates a good mystery around the characters. More time is spent understanding the man rather than unearthing the perpetrators, which is both intriguing and a bit disappointing.

At 10 episodes, the series is unable to create a good mystery and is more of a drama rather than an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Thus, if you expected a nailbiter, this one will disappoint. The ending is ambiguous and doesn’t exactly answer our questions, and neither does it tell us who the perpetrator is. We have only small clues that give us an estimate of who could’ve murdered Muthu and how his head ended up in the village.

Despite its heartwarming nature, the series has serious pacing issues which can get on your nerves. Some subplots feel forced and unnecessary, and bog down the runtime further. There are some very silly elements as well that make it difficult to believe whatever is happening onscreen. Despite all of this, the series grounds itself thanks to Sethupathi’s fantastic performance. The supporting cast is great as well, and makes you keep watching. Overall, this one’s fine, although nothing memorable.

Muthu Alias Kaattaan Ending Explained

In the Tamil series Muthu Alias Kaattaan, things start on an amusing, albeit terrifying, way when a dismembered head is found in a village where the number of people keeps dwindling by the minute. The population is so lacking, in fact, that the sole police station is on the verge of shutting down. Desperate to keep things running, Constable Kalai Pandiyan holds on to the last shred of hope, the severed head, to hopefully continue to stay in the village with his wife and goats.

The series then spans over decades as the police officers speak to different people who knew Muthu, getting different versions of him the deeper they investigate.

Who killed Muthu?

Throughout the runtime of the series, we get to know who Muthu is – a man who has gone through a lot in life, but his fierce loyalty and unflinching need for justice pushed him to make decisions that ultimately ended in him losing his life. The series showcases the village police officers going out of their way to find out Muthu’s murderer, and over the course of their investigation, they learn about his history.

Muthu’s involvement with Sivendra got him into tough waters as Sivendra’s rivalry with smuggler Johny ended in Sivendra’s murder. Muthu, who was very close to Sivendra, swore vengeance and followed his murderer’s steps, landing him in Meena’s path and eventually developing a romantic connection with her. Having already lost Sindhu in the past due to Johny, this time around, Muthu refuses to take any chances with her and ends up and when Johny’s men come too close, he leaves her to keep her safe.

In the end, Muthu and Johny clash after the latter gets out of prison, ending in a huge blast that apparently kills them both. However, Muthu’s head is found in Kalai Pandiyan’s village, which leaves all of them confused – how did only his head arrive here?

Sidharthan, despite whatever was shown about his alcoholism and whatnot, is the one who pieces everything together in the end. He realises Muthu’s plan to save Meena from Johny’s men, and he used the police to spread the word of his demise so that no one would go after her to find him. However, he is unable to solve the case completely – he is unable to figure out why he went to the mental hospital, or why his head was cut off.

The end sequence showcases Sidharthan stumbling upon a writing on a broken-down wall where Muthu’s head was initially found. The writing showcases a painting and the words “mom, dad and Muthu,” seemingly written by a child. It leaves him further confused. The audience sees that Meena and her son seemingly stayed in this house years ago. Did Pattalam Babu bring Muthu’s head to finally rest in his old home?

It’s not clear, as it might also just indicate that Muthu could’ve had a better, happier life had things not worked out in the way that they did. The ending is left ambiguous on purpose as it showcases a mysterious man’s life and experiences, someone we might never know completely.
