Death can change many lives, some for the better and some for the worse. Insomniacs After School Episode 1 is the first episode of a show that explores this topic through the eyes of two teenagers. Insomniacs After School is a romance and drama anime based on a manga written and illustrated by Makoto Ojiro. The series is animated by Studio LIDENFILMS and is also known as Kimisomu Episode 1 and Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia Episode 1 in original Japanese.
The Astronomy Club suffered a terrible tragedy when one of its members committed suicide some time ago. The club and where they used to work, the observatory, are all lying empty without use. It is the perfect scenario for two delinquents who don’t know a better use for their time to accidentally meet and go on a journey that would change their lives forever. They haven’t lived much of their lives, to begin with, so it’s not that big of a deal.
Grumpy insomniac Ganta Nakami stumbles across the moderately rebellious yet easygoing Isaki Magari in the Astronomy Club’s abandoned observatory. Magari is surprised and tries to avoid a confrontation, only to be stopped by a broken door, forcing the two of them inside. The two forge an unlikely friendship, leading them to use the observatory as a safe space for them to interact and discuss the one thing that ails them both- inability to sleep.

Two other people are dealing with their own grief of not being able to sleep in their own ways as well, and both of their ideas involve heading on towards the same astronomy club that got shut down. There are two main characters in the show, and they are not exactly entirely unique to this show. One of them is a delinquent who doesn’t have much hope in life at the young age that he is in. The other one is not in as bad a condition but is still hiding something behind the rebelliousness in their demeanour. Their dynamic is going to make or break the show as we proceed to fall deeper into the struggle that the two are dealing with.
