Why does the episode begin with Tanya praying to God?

The episode begins with Tanya praying to God, but not in the way that everybody else does. She chants everything as she was supposed to and then shoots the statue’s head off.

Does Mary come back?

Yes, Mary, who can be considered the arch-nemesis of Tanya, seemed perfectly fine after recovering. It is a wonder how she managed to survive all those bullet shots, but most likely we will see her face to face against Tanya very soon. This time as well, she just claimed that she would get rid of Tanya.

What is Tanya’s position in the army now?

Tanya has been granted a full battalion called the Salamander, which includes many soldiers and even tanks. She gets a huge manpower boost, so they should be able to win. However, that was not the case with Tanya. When they went to the front lines, she realised just how immature and untrained her soldiers were. Where they were clearly not supposed to attack, they attacked, and where they were supposed to preserve their bullets, they did not. She even acknowledged that the new mages in her team are not even worth utilising as human shields.

How did Tanya handle the situation?

When she realises that her men do not have the necessary training, she takes everything into her own hands. Tanya herself goes after many aircraft and completely destroys them single-handedly, showing her soldiers, as well, just how powerful she is. This section was absolutely brilliant.

Does Tanya finally confront her soldiers about what they did wrong?

Later, she calls every commander in her tent and tells them just how pathetic they were on the battlefield.

What is the current situation of the war, and which countries are fighting Tanya’s nation?

Tanya describes that the war began when the Entente Alliance violated their borders. However, the war has now spread to the entire continent. The Empire managed to occupy the northern territories of its enemies, but the Partisans have started to fight back. Towards the south, a group called Free Republic is also fighting them.

Plus, their fight against the Federation on the eastern front has become one of the most challenging things ever. Other foreign parties might officially stay away from the war, but they help the Empire’s enemies out. The situation is extremely murky for Tanya, and it is reflected in her thought process.

How does Tanya fare in the surprise attack that takes place in this episode?

The surprise attack went surprisingly smoothly because the enemies also sent troops who were not particularly well-trained. However, this does not change the ground reality.

What worked and what did not work?

As usual, the story draws heavily from real-world history and appears to take inspiration from the First and Second World Wars. Tanya also comments on the severe conditions soldiers face while fighting in the snow. This realistic portrayal of war adds a lot to the story.

Apart from that, compared to the first season, the animation was a lot better here. Yes, they do use CGI, but it is not jarring or gets in the way of enjoying the visual experience. All in all, this is a really good start for an action-packed series like this one.
