In Her Hands Trailer: The Story of Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan’s Youngest Female Mayor

Netflix’s upcoming documentary In Her Hands trailer is here with an important lesson which conveys the importance of education for women. Directed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen, the documentary stars Zarifa Ghafari herself as she takes us on her journey which is certainly not an easy one.

The trailer of the upcoming documentary shows Zarifa overlooking the city where she holds the position of mayor while the Taliban are seen advancing into Afghanistan ready to show their rule. As she walks among the people to see the troubles that they are facing, there are problems moving towards her as well.

The scene then shifts to her introducing herself and we get a glimpse of the life of the woman who became the first female mayor of Maidan Shahr, Afghanistan. While the men in the city look down on a female being given the post, their mindset of women being more suitable for housework still exists.

But Zarifa stands up to say that men have been given enough time, and while Afghanistan faces a “tsunami of hunger” these men have achieved absolutely nothing. Now, as the Islamic militants are going around killing girls who dare to learn, the women shed tears as the help promised to them by other countries has never been received.

As the Taliban continue to go door-to-door to kill the people on their blacklist, Zarifa too receives death threats as they tell her to leave the city if she wants to save her life. And soon, she faces a life-threatening accident which she luckily survives.

She now fights for the rights of education for women while standing still in Maidan Shahr as she spreads the importance of teaching a girl and becomes a champion among people. She stands still amidst the dangers surrounding her while fighting for the people and providing them with the help that they need.
