May It Please the Court Ending: Did Si-baek and Chak-hee Get Justice?

May It Please the Court (변론을 시작하겠습니다) is a law-drama TV series directed by Kang Min-ku and stars Jung Ryeo-won, Lee Kyu-hyung, Jung Jin-young and Kim Hye-eun, alongside other cast members.

The series is based on the novel Byeonloneul Shijakhagekseubmida by Jung Hye-jin. May It Please the Court has 12 episodes with an average runtime of 60 minutes.

Disney+ describes the show as:

NOH CHAK-HEE, THE ACE LAWYER OF THE BIG LAW FIRM, JANGSAN, BECOMES A PUBLIC DEFENDER OVERNIGHT AND MUST DEFEND THE CRIMINAL WHO KILLED HER LOVED ONE.

The May It Please the Court finale got us a satisfying conclusion to Chak-hee and Si-baek’s plights, complete with a heartbreaking reveal that leaves us feeling just a bit hopeless and raw.

Personally, I felt like the story was more about Chi-sik than it was about our leads – the former’s past haunts us all in more ways than one and a tiny sliver of the past as Chi-sik dies, in the end, is enough to activate the tear buds.

That being said, what happened in the end? Did Gi-do pay for all the crimes that he has committed? Did Dong-pil get what he deserved? And, probably most importantly, did Chak-hee and Si-baek end up together?

Chak-hee takes the lead in May It Please the Court episode 12 and takes us with her as she pieces the different pieces of evidence to give us a satisfying conclusion. She figures out her ‘loving’ grandfather’s past, wherein it turns out that he assumed the identity of someone else to keep the truth hidden – that Byung-chun is actually a feared torture specialist police officer who was known to get false confessions for his own gain.

Plus, Byung-chun also murdered Chak-hee’s grandmother when she figured out the truth. Incidentally, Yi-yeon witnessed the murder, and thus her relationship with her family has been strained ever since.

Moreover, thanks to some classic breaking and entering as well as some good detective work, she figures out Si-baek’s motives as well as his real identity. Yes, May It Please the Court episode 12 finally brings out the shocking truth – and it has a tender love story in its midst.

If you remember, there was a grave beside Chak-hee’s grandmother’s where Gi-do, Si-baek and Chi-sik visited. The woman, named Hee-soo, was actually Si-baek’s sister (whose real identity is Hee-jun) and Chi-sik’s to-be wife. They were involved in a strike of sorts wherein they wanted rights and benefits, but their plans were upended when Gi-do, working as a mole for his father, handed all of them over to the police.

As Byung-chun took over, he tortured everyone involved, resulting in Jang-ho, Si-baek’s father’s death. The torture left his mother mentally unstable and Chi-sik with a limp. Meanwhile, Gi-do sexually assaulted Hee-soo in his attempt to “get her”, which resulted in her taking her own life.

This heartbreaking string of revelations ended in Chak-hee helping Si-baek get justice.

Meanwhile, Chi-sik, who has been using one of the torturers from the past, Dal-jae (actually Lee Dong-pil), to do his dirty deed, leaves him tied and gagged with the evidence of his crimes strewn around him and hands him over to the police.

As a last attempt to get justice for his sweetheart, Chi-sik invites Gi-do to an unfinished and dilapidated building, wherein he asks him to ask for forgiveness for that he can move on. Unfortunately, Gi-do, much like his father, refuses to acknowledge his own shortcomings and faults and doubles down on calling everyone other than those belonging to his social class “vermin”.

As Gi-do goes in to strangle Chi-sik, who is secretly recording the entire conversation, Si-baek and Chak-hee also get there and bear witness to Chi-sik sacrificing himself in order to nab Gi-do once and for all.

In the end, Gi-do and Dae-hyeon do get jail time while Dong-pil is sentenced to death. Chak-hee and Si-baek share a rather sweet relationship with hints of romance, but I am guessing that anyone will need some space if something like this transpires in their lives!
