I’m Not Afraid Ending Explained: In Netflix’s crime-mystery miniseries (No Tengo Miedo), a young boy takes it upon herself to save a kidnapped kid the same age as him and finds out some harsh truths about those closest to him. The series, throughout its six episodes, reveals how fear, poverty, and desperation can corrupt good people and take away children’s innocence. The young boy, however, refuses to let the darkness define him and, instead, becomes a symbol of hope not only for Felipe, but also for everyone around him.

The finale showcases a fantastic display of courage as the adults around Miguel scramble to save themselves, leaving behind questions surrounding Felipe’s fate and what happened to the adults who chose to stay silent instead of doing the right thing.

Why Was Felipe Being Hidden?

The central mystery of the series revolves around Felipe, whom Miguel stumbled upon while playing in an abandoned home. He quickly realises that Felipe has been kept captive there and has been kidnapped, and he desperately tries to free him. Eventually, the truth comes out that the kidnappers are none other than the adults in their small community who got together hoping to blackmail Felipe’s father and get him to pay ransom. Suffering from crippling financial stress, the adults found this to be the only option in front of them and thus, to keep this ruse up and away from prying eyes, they kept the young boy confined in the ruins alone and with no way of escape.

Even when their identities are exposed not only to their children but also the police, the adults continue to hide the boy and refuse to let him go home, fearing arrest and losing their lives. The series, however, cleverly doesn’t portray the adults as purely evil, but victims of a flawed system themselves. After having lost everything, they cooked up this crazy plan that they continued to double down on, fearing their choices.

Why Does Miguel Keep Returning to Felipe?

Miguel is the moral conscience of the series and, after finding Felipe, continues to go back to him to help him get out. When he isn’t able to open his shackles, he gives him clean food and water and plays with him to make him as comfortable as possible. He starts to feel an obligation towards him as the two become fast friends, highlighting the innocence of childhood bonds. He doesn’t understand the adults’ choices or reasons; he simply sees a boy the same as him and wants to help.

His growing determination to see Felipe get free reflects the series’ central theme that children often have a better sense of right and wrong because they are not burdened with complex thoughts and sensibilities.

Does Miguel Manage to Save Felipe?

Yes, Miguel takes his friends’ help and is able to free Felipe from his hiding spot. By the time the adults get there, they are all long gone. Eventually, they make a plan to split up, and Miguel personally runs off with Felipe, hoping to deliver him safely to his parents. This showcases Miguel’s determination to fulfil his responsibility to his friend. The last scene, however, leaves Felipe’s fate open-ended as the police helicopters spot him, Miguel and Pino in the open field, while Rodrigo tries to shoot the young boy to save himself.

What Happens to the Kidnappers?

The women, including Rosa, Teresa and Guadalupe, along with their children, run away, leaving Rodrigo and Pino to find Miguel. The latter two are seemingly caught by the police while giving chase to the kids. Meanwhile, Margarita and Chava are arrested by the police after Margarita tries to take the money offered to anyone who could give information on Felipe. Despite being a part of the scheme, she tries to outsmart the police and eventually gets caught in her own game.

However, despite justice finally arriving, it’s clear that everyone here has lost something important to them along the way. Their lives will never be the same after this, and the series constantly reminds us of that.

What Does the Ending Really Mean?

The ending, showcasing Miguel never leaving Felipe’s side till the end, highlights how childhood innocence gives way to moral responsibility when people are put in impossible situations. Throughout the series, Miguel continues to take a stand for Felipe, showcasing that despite everything, he knows what’s right and will stick by what he said come what may. Despite the title, Miguel is, of course, afraid of the choices that he is making on his own against his own parents sometimes, but he continues to push forward and keep the fear at bay.

This also makes the finale emotional, as it puts forth hope when everything seems hopeless. While the adults live with the knowledge that their selfish actions destroyed all of their lives and that their children will never look at them the same way, the kids know what their parents did, which will of course have a deep impact on them. In the end, it’s a bittersweet ending for viewers.
