House of the Dragon: All About the Cast and Characters in the Game of Thrones Prequel Series

House of the Dragon is an upcoming fantasy drama series, the prequel to the Game of Thrones series. Martin and Ryan Condal serve as co-creators of the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are showrunners, and the pair also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt.

Greg Yaitanes is the director and co-executive producer. Clare Kilner and Geeta Vasant Patel also direct the series. Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi has done the music score. House of the Dragon, releasing on HBO and HBO Max, this month, is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

Viserys I Targaryen Played by Paddy Considine

Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

Rhaenyra Targaryen Played by Emma D’Arcy

The king’s first-born child. She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragon rider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything but she was not born a man. She expects to become the Seven Kingdom’s first queen regnant but will that become a reality with her stepbrother Aegon, being in the line for the throne?

In the House of the Dragon, the role of the young Rhaenyra Targaryen is portrayed by Milly Alcock. Jacaerys Velaryon played by Harry Collett, is the eldest son of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Daemon Targaryen Played by Matt Smith

The younger brother to King Viserys, and peerless warrior and dragon rider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air. He is also the heir presumptive to the Iron Throne but the complete opposite of his brother, a rebel who wants glory and power.

Alicent Hightower Played by Olivia Cooke

She’s the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle. She possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen. Alicent was brought in to be the new bride to Viserys I after his wife, Aemma, died in childbirth. Emily Carey portrays young Alicent Hightower.

She wishes that her son Aegon should be the next heir to the throne, causing a rift with Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Otto Hightower Played by Rhys Ifans

The Hand of the King, Ser Otto loyally and faithfully serves both his king (Jaehaerys & Viserys) and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king’s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne. He also pushes his support for his grandson, Aegon’s claim over Rhaenyra to the throne.

Lord Corlys Velaryon ‘The Sea Snake’ Played by Steve Toussaint

The lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen. As ‘The Sea Snake,’ the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros, Lord Corlys built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world.

He married Rhaenys Targaryen, daughter of Prince Aemon, King Jaehaerys’ son and once heir to the Iron Throne before his death.

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen/Velaryon Played by Eve Best

A dragon rider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, ‘The Queen Who Never Was’ was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favoured her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male. Along with Lord Corlys, she believes that her son Laenor Velaryon should be considered for the throne.

Mysaria Played by Sonoya Mizuno

She came to Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can recall, and she could have wilted but instead, she rose to become the most trusted and most unlikely ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne. She hails from Lys and serves as the mistress of whisperers to Daemon Targaryen, by giving him all the information from all around King’s Landing as he plots and schemes to take over the throne.

Criston Cole Played by Fabien Frankel

Being of Dornish descent, Ser Criston is the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. He has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honour and his preternatural skill with a sword. He is one of the best knights in Westeros, and rose to the position of Lord Commander of Viserys I’s Kingsguard and even defeats Daemon Targaryen in tourneys.

The other cast from the series includes Baela Targaryen played by Bethany Antonia, the eldest daughter of Laena Velaryon and rider of the young dragon Moondancer. Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) – second daughter of Lady Laena and sister to Baela.

Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall), is a crafty and calculating politician and twin to Lord Jason Lannister. Lord Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) The Lord of Casterly Rock and twin to Ser Tyland Lannister. Ser Vaemond Velaryon (Wil Johnson) is the younger brother of Corlys Velaryon and commander in the Velaryon navy.

Ser Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan and Theo Nate) is the son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen. Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) is the second-born son of Viserys, nephew to Daemon, and half-brother to Rhaenyra. Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) is the second-born daughter of Viserys, sister to Aegon and Aemond, and half-sister to Rhaenyra.

House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is coming to HBO and HBO Max on August 21. But for the Indian audience, will be available on 22 August on Disney+ Hotstar.
