Horror Films to Watch for Beginners this Halloween 2022
The Ring (2002)
The Ring is a classic supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox, and Daveigh Chase. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata’s 1998 Japanese horror film Ring, based on Koji Suzuki’s 1991 eponymous novel.
In this film, when four teenagers all meet with mysterious deaths exactly one week after watching just such a tape, investigative reporter Rachel Keller tracks down the video and watches it, and what follows is something that nobody could imagine. Paranormal Activity (2007)
It is also a supernatural horror film written, co-produced, photographed, edited, and directed by Oren Peli. It is the first (chronologically, the third) entry into the Paranormal Activity film series. The film centres on a young couple, Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home.
After a young, middle-class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic and active at night
It is presented in the style of found footage, from cameras set up by the couple in an attempt to document what is haunting them. The film sets up found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later films of the series. You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.
Friday the 13th (2009)
In a chilling re-imagining of the classic horror film Friday the 13th. Searching for his missing sister, Clay (Jared Padalecki) heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake, where he stumbles on the creaky remains of the rotting old cabins behind moss-covered trees. But that’s not the only thing lying in wait under the brush.
It is a slasher horror film directed by Marcus Nispel, written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift from a screen story by Shannon, Swift and Mark Wheaton. The franchise mainly focuses on the fictional character Jason Voorhees, who was thought to have drowned as a boy at Camp Crystal Lake due to the negligence of the camp staff. Decades later, the lake is rumoured to be ‘cursed’ and is the setting for a series of mass murders.

The Conjuring (2013)
Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
The film is directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes and is the first film in The Conjuring Universe franchise. It includes the classic genre of a haunted house with the exorcists sub-genre. You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.
The Babadook (2014)
Starring Essie Davis, Daniel Henshall, Tim Purcell, Tiffany Lyndall-Knight, and Noah Wiseman. Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6-year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both.
When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour, is forced to medicate him.
But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real. You can watch this psychological horror on Amazon Prime Video.
Hereditary (2018)
Hereditary is also a psychological horror film written and directed by Ari Aster. In this film, when Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.
It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, and Gabriel Byrne as the members of a family haunted by a mysterious presence after the death of their secretive grandmother. You can watch this film on Amazon Prime Video.
