The Patient Episode 7: Kaddish

What unfolded in the last two episodes of The Patient is horrific to be said the least. Sam’s uncontrollable urge to kill landed Elias on his death bed but, it also gave Alan the issue with Sam, the lack of empathy just keeps popping up again and again. As tragic as Elias’ death was, it gave Alan the way out- stuffing a note that is a call for help for anyone who finds Elias’ body.

In The Patient Episode 7, all of Alan’s efforts seem to be gone haywire because, although, he convinced Sam to drop Elias’ body in a place where he could be found, Sam just ended up burying Elias at a site where he will never be seen as he got conscious of what if Elias’ death is tracked back to him. With this died Alan’s last burning flame of hope. The note that Alan scribbled in urgency had every bit of hope and faith Alan had left and with the letter now gone, Alan’s tired and grim outlook on the entire situation has become overpowering.

As The Patient’s seventh episode progresses, Alan continues to have his imaginary, bittersweet chat with his dead therapist, Charlie. The memories of the past concerning Beth and Ezra keep haunting him. In this episode, especially, we see the extremes to which Ezra went for his fundamentalist faith to disregard his mother’s dying wish. It all clubs as a sad cloud of despair and misery over Alan’s head as he continues to be Sam’s prisoner and therapist.

But, Alan’s time is so close to being up. Because The Patient Episode 7 shows us Sam’s active search for a new therapist. The moment Sam killed Elias, we all knew that Alan’s job as a therapist is surely over and, soon enough, he will be the next victim of Sam. But, it is in this episode that the thought comes to a realization as we see Sam rekindle his bond with his old school counsellor, who isn’t really interested in the odd kid to start with.

The Patient Episode 7 really highlights the lows and despair of both Sam and Alan’s life. For Sam, who is trying to be better but, can’t, this episode is a point of being completely lost as he no longer knows if anyone can even help him to begin with. Meanwhile, Alan’s struggles get real with every passing moment of the hallucination of the Auschwitz barracks, the angry conversations with his dead therapist in his head and the troublesome past he has had with his son. Everything ends with possible darkness in this episode and that is exactly why things are becoming scarier than we anticipated them to be.

The Patient Episode 7: Final Thoughts

‘Kaddish’ is an episode rightly titled because this 28 minutes ride is nothing but a prayer of mourning- one preparing to die and, another wanting to save himself from being a killer. The Patient is steadily taking a dark turn and the upcoming episodes are going to either break our hearts or thrill us with a glimmer of hopefulness.

  1. Totally love this series – acting, writing, music; however am mystified…where did Alan get the book he was reading while sitting on the floor by the bed. In the last episode He has a small Rubic Cube – HELP!
