Sir David Attenborough is not a name unknown to many. And whenever he is providing the voiceover of some new wildlife show, it’s almost a given that it’s going to be an intimate and attentive look into the lives of these animals.

Dynasties II, released around 4 years after the very popular first season, is here with 6 new families of striking and endangered animals to look into and marvel at. Being a Sony BBC show, it’s a given that the cinematography is going to be brilliant. It’s something that you hope for, and it’s something that is delivered quite well in the second season.

Looking into the fascinating lives of pumas, meerkats, cheetahs and whatnot, the show captivatingly captures the areas surrounding these animals, which play as much of a role in the animals’ lives as their enemies in these harsh climates. From the breathtaking but harsh natural surroundings of the Patagonian Andes to the mesmerising and unforgiving Liuwa Plain in Zambia, the series will captivate you with its beautiful scenery.

That being said, it’s always interesting to watch how animal families live and grow together. We are watching the lives of these animals flourish through the tough times that they go through, so there’s not too much heartbreak for us viewers (thankfully). But life is always going to be difficult in the wild, and it’s a really thrilling ride. Watching Rupestre’s struggles in Patagonia will sometimes give you goosebumps, as will the sweet moments.

I really like short stories of animals like these. There’s always an element of thrill and anticipation in every moment. Plus, whenever there’s a particularly cute moment, it always ends up warming my heart. Dynasties II does something similar and is quite an easy and eventful watch. Some episodes, however, are better than others, with sometimes getting sluggish and uneventful sometimes.

Truthfully, it does get boring sometimes. I sometimes felt like I had seen this exact story in some other nature documentary (although the chances are slim) that really took me out of watching the show in general. The show quickly did pull me back in eventually (I mean, it’s animals, how can you not be engrossed), but still, I did wonder about the point of another similar show. Plus, sometimes the show misses out on some crucial answers to important questions that will leave you scratching your head.

But Dynasties II does know how to be dramatic with its stories. It’s a combination of Sir Attenborough’s voiceover and the script that dramatises and humanises these animals and showcases their lives in the most enchanting ways possible. With almost hour-long episodes, the nature documentary makes us care for these animals, their families and their issues too well. By the end, we care deeply about whether or not Rupestre’s cubs are fine or whether Angelina is able to take care of her herd.

It’s these stories that bind you to the show. Sure, battling another puma is always thrilling, but seeing a tiny Atlast struggling to get out of the swamp because the poor baby is just so exhausted from starvation is a heartbreaking scene. It makes you root for these animals fiercely. Interestingly enough, even though we have an episode dedicated to them, hyenas turn out to be the villain in literally every story; it’s almost amusing. Anyway, Dynasties II does a fantastic job here – you really can’t stop watching the episode once you start.

Summing Up: Dynasties II

At the end of everything, though, Dynasties II is a fun and informative watch. It’s great watching a family live their lives in the wilderness and survive the worst possible situations. The resilience and foresight that the mothers have is nothing but extraordinary, and that alone, along with, of course, the cute babies, will keep you invested in these dramatic stories of families of different kinds.

Dynasties is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
