– Dig Deeper The Disappearance of Birgit Meier review contains mild spoilers –

The first season contains clips of actual people who were a part of the investigation as well as close relatives and friends of Brigit Meiers herself. However, actors have been hired to play and bridge the gaps between narratives to maintain the flow of the series. Birgit was a photographer who was married to a businessman named Harald and had a daughter called Yasmine. The synopsis of the series reads, “Birgit Meier disappears, but the police have other concerns. Only Wolfgang Sielaff – her brother and himself a police detective – suspects that she is the victim of a brutal crime”.

The series starts with a brief introduction to Brigit Meiers and her relationship with her husband and beloved daughter Yasmine. Birgit is portrayed as a devoted mother, her life revolving around her daughter. On the other hand, her relationship with her husband was not the best. It was hanging on by threads and they were separated. Dig Deeper The Disappearance of Birgit Meier paints a very homely and warm picture of a mother who could never desert a daughter and hence when the viewer realises that Brigit might have disappeared, it comes as a shock.

Dig Deeper The Disappearance of Birgit Meier, like many other crime docuseries is based on hope. The director has made sure to capture the body movements as well as the eyes of the speakers during the interview sessions. Birgit’s brother, the policeman Wolfgang Sielaff has been the main driving force behind the continuation of the investigation which would otherwise be stopped a long time back.

Although Dig Deeper The Disappearance of Birgit Meier is a crime docuseries, it feels like a story of love at the end. Birgit’s brother’s endless determination and perseverance win the viewer over. The viewer keeps hoping that Birgit is found or at least some closure is gained to provide  Wolfgang Sielaff and Yasmine some sort of relief. Investigators and the entire police department, due to the lack of evidence were initially led to believe that Birgit was on the run or had committed suicide.

Things took a turn when her connection with her next-door gardener Kurt-Werner Wichmann was revealed. She had met him a week before her disappearance at a birthday party. Kurt’s involvement with the murder was not initially looked into, which gave him a chance to get away from the police. It was only in the year 1993 that he became a prime suspect. The police then searched his house to find a secret house with weapons, maps and a secret passage. The new findings along the way lead to no new steps due to  Kurt-Werner Wichmann’s untimely demise.
