Black Clover Season 2 Episode 4 Review

Nacht’s Past Reveals the Man Behind the Mystery
The first half of this Black Clover episode had a lot to do with Nacht and his past. My perception of this vice captain definitely changed after what I saw happen to him. At first, I thought that he was a very upright person and he had always been like that from the very beginning. However, it became apparent that he became the person he is today because of a traumatic past event involving his family. Nacht was from a prestigious family and also had a twin brother, Morgen. The twin brother looked very much like Nacht’s present self when they were young, and Nacht, on the other hand, had a completely different appearance.

Nacht changed his hair colour to blonde and led the life of a delinquent who was least interested in using his magic for good. He was also not interested in working as a Magic Knight. He definitely knew Yami, but their relationship had more to do with two troublemakers using magic and nothing else. He chose to become the vice captain alongside Yami after he lost something very important to him. Not only does his appearance change, but he also changes as a person, and Nacht becomes one of the most talented yet mysterious vice captains within the Clover Kingdom.
Nacht Goes Beyond His Limits Against the Supreme Devils

Nacht is an extremely powerful vice captain who is one of the very few people to have a contract with four devils. This should make him absolutely unbeatable in every way or form. However, that does not happen. The Supreme Devils, who came in front of him, were far more powerful. His initial plan was to waste their time and just try to survive their attacks, but he soon realised he would not be able to do that anymore.
In his past, he did have an encounter with a Supreme Devil, and it did not go well. He tried to make a contract with such an entity, but again that was not something that was possible for the young Nacht. Thus, when he has to face two such devils, it is only natural that he will struggle a lot.

Even then, Nacht does not give in to his weaknesses. He also says the very important catchphrase that he will go beyond his limit at that moment, and he does that by merging his two demons and unlocking a brand new form. This fight was really engaging, and it looked visually stunning.
Asta Shines in Another Spectacular Battle

The second half was more focused on Asta and his powers. Asta’s power is nothing but a cheat code for him to win almost every fight. It doesn’t matter how much magic a devil has, because Asta’s anti-magic will clear that out. It is just Asta himself who needs to be capable enough to hold himself in front of these greater opponents.
This time as well, Asta showcased just why he is the protagonist. His powers were brilliant, and again the action sequences involving him were great to watch.
Final Thoughts

I absolutely loved this episode, and Nacht’s backstory really added to the emotional angle of the plot. I also enjoyed his fight, which ended in an unexpected way. However, I must mention the absolutely stunning animation from start to finish. Not a single panel looked bad, and the transformations were just gorgeous.
