Devil May Cry Season 2 Ending Explained
What Happens in the Finale?
The season’s ending comes with terrifying consequences as Arius and Argosax merge with one another and become too powerful for Vergil and Dante to control. Without a choice, they open the barrier between Earth and Makai and push Argosax into Makai with the hope that Mundus will get the demon under control.
It goes according to plan, but everything quickly falls apart when the brothers’ alliance is tested, and Mundus reveals what truly happened with their father. Although he agrees that he killed Eva, their mother, he reiterates that Sparda wasn’t the good guy that they had made him out to be. In fact, he was Mundus’s greatest ally and a skilled warrior and didn’t care for Eva. In fact, he tells them that she was only there as a fascination for him. When he was done with her, he promptly left her.

Why Do Dante and Vergil Fight?
Once sure that Mundus needed to be murdered, Vergil realises that they didn’t know Sparda as much as they’d like to. Whatever they knew of their father was through Eva, who loved her husband with everything. Meanwhile, Dante is unable to overcome the heartbreak of the truth and refuses to believe Mundus, believing, instead, in their mother’s love.
This, in the end, results in their fractured ideology, and to Dante’s dismay, Vergil refuses to come back to Earth with him. He chooses to stay back and fight against Mundus and get vengeance, ultimately hoping to control Makai and help it move forward. Although he’s against Mundus, he agrees with his thoughts. This leaves Dante heartbroken, who had finally found his brother again and was hoping to make amends. Unfortunately, Vergil pushes Dante back to Earth after defeating him and sends the gem on the Sword of Sparda with him.

Does Mundus Win?
Mundus wins, in a way. He defeats Argosax and then tells Vergil and Dante the truth about their past, hoping to get them both on his side and defeat Earth together. Unfortunately, Vergil refuses to take his orders anymore and decides to take matters into his own hands. He takes up his father’s mantle and fights Mundus, hoping to defeat him and sit on the throne of Makai. Their fight’s outcome, however, is left ambiguous, possibly for the next season.
What Does the Broken Gem Signify?
The broken gem is a symbolic moment that showcases Vergil and Dante’s fractured relationship. Although they were seemingly making progress and seeing eye to eye, by the end, Vergil finally sees the truth, and, as a result, they emotionally and ideologically split apart. Although strongest when united, they must now fight the battle separately and, maybe even against one another, in the future.

Does Vergil Become a Villain in the End?
No, Vergil doesn’t become a villain like Mundus, who is only interested in conquering realms and people without looking at what is lost. He processed his childhood tragedy differently and even remarks in episode 8 whether, if they had switched places, Vergil would be living Dante’s life. Alas, Vergil believes that the only way to protect oneself against suffering is to have power, and he can’t do that on Earth or with his human emotions with him.
What is significant, however, is that despite their differences and his now different stance, Vergil continues to care for Dante and chooses to send him to Earth instead of killing him, which he could’ve easily done. It’s clear – their destinies are different, and Vergil has embraced his new role.

What Might Happen in Devil May Cry Season 3?
In Season 3, Dante and Vergil’s fight might get even more intense. We will also see how the fight between Mundus and Vergil will end, although hopefully it feels like things will tip towards Vergil. Lady’s quest will also become significant as she goes off on her own to hunt down her father. It’s also possible that Vergil’s Nelo Angelo storyline from the games might become significant.
