Daemons of the Shadow Realm Overview
Daemons of the Shadow Realm/Yomi no Tsugai is a Japanese manga series created by Hiromu Arakawa. She is best known for the Fullmetal Alchemist franchise. This story began serialisation in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine in December 2021, where it gained attention among shonen readers.
The series was then made into an anime with the adaptation handled by Bones Film, which premiered in April 2026. The project was first announced during Anime Expo 2025. This is directed by Masahiro Andō, with series composition by Noboru Takagi, character designs by Nobuhiro Arai, and music by Kenichiro Suehiro. The anime is set to run for two consecutive cours.

The opening theme, “Tobu Toki,” is performed by Vaundy, while the ending theme, “Tobō yo,” is by Yama. Internationally, the series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, with distribution in Southeast Asia handled by Muse Communication.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 1 Review

The episode begins with the birth of twins, and we are quickly told that it is clearly not a good sign. It is obvious from the look on the father’s face that he is not happy with the birth. We also learn that these two kids are supposed to rule over demons. The setting starts off pretty normally, where we see the hero, Yuru, a normal village boy, going about his days. He has a twin sister, Asa, who usually stays inside the house, and very few people go to meet her. We get a sense that not many people live within the village because most of them prefer to go outside to earn a living.
However, Yuru refuses to leave because he wants to stay with his sister, who most likely is not allowed to go out. We also get introduced to a very important character, Dera, who comes to the village to deliver supplies from time to time. But the peaceful element switches, and the tone of the anime completely shifts when, in this medieval village, we see planes and helicopters. Apparently, there was a barrier that was supposed to protect the villagers from outsiders, and that has been broken.

But what is unleashed because of this broken barrier completely takes you by surprise. We get lots of killings and a good amount of gore, with heads flying. There is also a massive twist towards the end of this episode, and we barely get any information regarding that particular aspect in detail. An interesting character gets introduced as well, but we do not know why she’s there and why she is killing everyone mercilessly. We even discovered that Yuru is definitely a very powerful boy, but he himself doesn’t know anything about his demons, whom he is supposed to control.
Verdict

With the introduction of a sibling relationship, this anime is again making me think about FMAB. The art style is very similar to that of FMAB, but the overall story is very different.
The way it started is also very impressive, and I definitely want to know what happens next. Here, the animation was especially good, automatically making this series something that everyone should check out.
