Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 Recap and Review: Love Finds a Way

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 (일타 스캔들) makes way for several blushy moments between the leading pair while bringing the trajectory of the show on course. Notably, the Kdrama series is directed by Yoo Je-Won and features Jeon Do-Yeon and Jung Kyoung-Ho in the titular roles. Moreover, the series also takes over tvN’s Saturday-Sunday 9:10 KST time slot previously occupied by Alchemy of Souls.

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 has a runtime of 75 minutes.

-Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 Recap Contains Spoilers-

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 starts with a flashback in time, where Nam Haeng-Seon (Jeon Do-Yeon) and Choi Chi-Yeol (Jung Kyoung-Ho) are present in their teenage years. Moreover, the unique blast from the past provides more context about their upbringings and also works as a window of reflection into their respective future. At first, we get to know about the personal tragedy in Choi Chi-Yeol’s life, involving the death of his father, followed by the compassion displayed by Nam Haeng-Seon’s mother.

The flashback ends when we get to see the young Nam Hae-E, left on the door of the dish store by her mom. Which is followed by the car crash of Nam Haeng-Seon’s mother. Furthermore, this short scene with multiple tragedies gives us a basic idea about the root cause of the character trait behind the leading characters.

For instance, the array of responsibility and sacrifice made Nam Haeng-Seon tough and positive over time, and were also the reason she gave up on athletics. Similarly, the basis of Choi Chi-Yeol’s discipline and rigorous work attitude lies in his self-dependency, right after the death of his father.

Finally, after this gloomy update, the drama moves on to the current scenario. Where, the star math instructor collides with the dish store owner, in a disguise. The second encounter between the two does not last long, as Nam Haeng-Seon was already in a hurry to enrol her niece into Choi Chi-Yeol’s course. And as fate would have it, the dedicated Nam Haeng-Seon becomes successful in getting the seat for the most wanted class in the city. All this, without actually knowing the real identity behind the new and eager customer.

In the second half of Crash Course in Romance Episode 2, we also get to see a soft and compassionate side of Choi Chi-Yeol. Which, to be honest, doesn’t last very long. The passionate math tutor teaches his class with utmost sincerity and also repeats his trademark flying kick to motivate the students (I still have no idea what Math as a subject has to do with it). He later bursts into his staff for not printing out the syllabus/curriculum on time and then gets back into his zero-care zone.

The episode also looms here and there, and provides a glimpse of jealousy, in the form of Bang Su-A’s attitude towards Nam Hae-E. Which is nothing but another story of envy between two classmates. Furthermore, the episode also featured a small moment of a pep talk, conducted by Kim Young-Joo, as she convinces about the one-sided feelings of the new eccentric customer.

At last, we get the moment of revelation in the episode, when Choi Chi-Yeol arrives for his dinner dish, wearing the same disguise. Earlier, he gifted a mobile phone to Nam Haeng-Seon as part of his redemption but finds himself in an awkward position due to the same. The proud owner of the food shop, take it upon herself to return the expensive gift, which she believes is the stranger’s way of expressing his feelings.

However, it doesn’t take long for Nam Jae-Woo to recognize the tiger jacket guy from the coaching poster, who ultimately exposes his identity in front of everyone. This is exactly when Nam Jae-Woo recognizes the thief from the hospital and confronts him with all her might.

Before everything leads to a ruckus, the window of the dish store shatters completely and shocks everyone. All the characters present in the scene simply get their head down and attempt to reach a safe position. Moreover, nothing much is revealed about the identity of the attacker, and the episode ends on an ambiguous cliffhanger.

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 Review

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2
A still from Crash Course in Romance Episode 2

Crash Course in Romance Episode 2 is tight and gripping in comparison to the first instalment and also provides a detailed characterization. Notably, there was a level playing field for the drama angle in the show, which was slightly missing in the first episode. For instance, the first fifteen minutes are enough to make you attach to the characters, and relate to their life decisions.

The supporting characters take a break from the instalment, as it’s mostly concentrated around the leading pair this time. And only make a small appearance in the form of accelerating the narrative.

I also have a hunch that things will get more serious in the next episode, which is clear by the attack on the stalker girl (Who is still present in his class for some weird reasons). Even though there is a lot to be uncovered about the incident, one can predict the danger for Choi Chi-Yeol in the upcoming episodes.

All in all, Crash Course in Drama Episode 2 was meaningful, mature and a finer take on the delicate romance of the series. You can stream the episode on Netflix. Let us know your thought about it in the comment section below.
