Country Queen Season 2: Has Netflix Renewed the Kenyan Thriller Series?

Country Queen, Netflix’s first attempt to widen its streaming territory to Kenya is a TV show that was released on 15th July 2022. It stars Melissa Kiplagat, Melvin Alusa, Nina Wacera, Raymond Ofula and Sheila Munyiva in titular roles. The show was shot in multiple languages including English, Swahili and other traditional languages of the soil. Country Queen spans 6 episodes, with each stretching about 60 minutes approximately.

The show follows Akisa, an event planner harbouring two lives, both unfulfilled. But surrounding Akisa and her decisions are a larger gamut of begrudging tactics by a mining corporation ready to wreak havoc on the livelihood of villagers.

The show was a direct attack on the moral ambiguity every character faces at given points in the storyline. And our protagonist, Akisa, somehow in the middle of this, manages to escape the tag of an equally corrupt person, as she is lesser of the multiple evils present.

Looking at the show from a production perspective, Country Queen had a lot of responsibility – to do justice as the first homegrown Kenyan show, justice to the stories of Kenyans, justice to their portrayal in mainstream cinema and lastly, justice to the streaming platform and gain traction. Justice was served, to say the least.

The only denunciation was a stretched storyline episodically. The creators over-explained every given context, which can feel heavy at times, and as the show didn’t need much elucidation, Country Queen did feel a little overbearing.

Country Queen Season 2: Is It a Possibility?

Country Queen Season 2: Has Netflix Renewed the Kenyan Thriller Series?

While conceptualising and writing the first season, the show hadn’t discovered the possibilities of a follow-up season. But considering the ending of the show, it’s quite possible that the makers could steer in that direction.

The entirety of the decision depends on Netflix’s judgement of the metrics, including the show’s first response rate and the drop-off rate. Most cancellations or renewals of any Netflix-based entertainment happen quickly, but for a few, it might take months to finalise the future of the show.

Keeping in check the response from the audience and the critics alike, Netflix should go forward with the renewal, but that is an answer we won’t be receiving for a few months at least.

It’s possible that the ending could stand on its own, as Akisa visits her father’s grave, still perplexed how he could give her son away while promising she would fight for the land if it means getting her son back. There are still some questions that remain unanswered, like whether Kyalo and Anna break up, Max’s titillating intentions about betraying Akisa and earning a seat at the table at Eco Rock and whether Vivienne will regret the atrocities she has so imposed on others.

But considering Netflix’s continued desire to expand internationally, a Season 2 might just be its first choice. Simultaneously, Netflix has also been remodelling their business strategy to appeal to a wider audience and release slates. So every news at this point is just speculation. If the show is renewed, you can expect Akisa to continue searching for her long-lost son and fight against corruption.

Country Queen is streaming now on Netflix.
