If you’re someone who just finished catching up to season 1 in order to enjoy the premiere of season 2, you probably had the best experience in watching this episode. The series started off exactly where it left off, which is a good thing in this case because the series ended off at a high and with the two best episodes of the entire season. There were definitely some ups and downs in the first season, but it’s hard to deny the quality of the last arc in particular. It seemed as if the show was finally getting into a groove as it ended, and thus, it’s great that we have a sequel to continue that momentum.

The show looked as crisp as ever in this outing, meaning that the animation quality has been upgraded from the first time. The colours were much more vibrant and the edges much more solid, giving the scenes a lot of definition. There was also the reintroduction of several characters that had to be done to get it out of the way. Classroom of the Elite has always had a lot to read on the screen in almost every episode, and that trend looks like it’s here to stay.

However, we’re going to have to talk about something troubling about this particular arc that is going to continue by the looks of it. The series relies upon many psychological and philosophical tests to make the classes compete against one another, and the quality of these tests can make or break the show at any given moment. For example, the island survival test was fantastic as it gave a lot of characters their time in the sun and, on top of it, just being exciting to watch. However, the latest test couldn’t be any more different from that.

Just reading the rules, not explaining them, mind you, took a full two minutes of real-time in the show. If that doesn’t clarify the problem, let me put it in plain words- the test is too complicated and verbose to enjoy. The rules have been designed in such a way that allows for a specific loophole for our protagonists to exploit and win, but even if it were obvious what that loophole was, it would have been hard to grasp because the rules are just that weird. The game is also one that would be only played in an anime such as this one since it is specifically designed to allow for a heroic comeback for our protagonists.

The show might prove us all wrong and make it unpredictable, but it doesn’t look likely. Now, I don’t doubt that the episodes that followed this one will be exciting and entertaining. It’s just that it is better to actually understand the mind games being played on the screen to better appreciate the character development and the writing done by the creators, something that’s taken away if you are just along for the ride without understanding how the ride works. Still, overall, this was a promising start to the series.

Verdict

Classroom Of The Elite Season 2 Episode 1 kept up the momentum that the previous season left off with and delivered upon some exciting new developments and a promising future. It would have been better if one actually understood what was going on, however.
