Chainsaw Man Episode 2 Review: Work Until Death

Man and chainsaw have become one, as Chainsaw Man Episode 2 sees Denji being introduced to a completely different side of Devil Hunting. Let’s see how he responds in this review!

Chainsaw Man Episode 2 Overview

Chainsaw Man Episode 2 Ball Kick

Chainsaw Man is an action, adventure and supernatural anime put on our screen by Studio MAPPA, a hugely popular studio behind some of the other extremely popular shonen properties right now, such as Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. The series is based on a manga of the same name written by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Click here to read the review of the previous episode!

The show is being directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who has been a part of the productions of Black Clover and Monster Musume. The series was first serialised on Jump+, an online counterpart to the hugely popular Shonen Jump magazine. The manga has sold over thirteen million copies in less than four years of circulation.

Tying Tie Chainsaw Man Episode 2

This show is effortlessly funny to a level that explains much of its internet popularity. The concept and the characters make for a bunch of humorous scenarios that are executed very well while still managing to tell a good story and elaborating upon a previously established character. Look at it like this- of course all Denji does while engaged in a physical confrontation with another male is kick him in the nutsack. Did you honestly expect anything different from him? If you did, that one is on you, not on how he is written.

The show ended Chainsaw Man Episode 1 in a way that left it with a million different ways to take its plot in. While I wouldn’t say this is the direction I expected or wanted the show to go, it is still very pleasant to see Denji running around with other misfit Devil Hunters in that squad that Makima has created. Now that’s an interesting personality to talk about- Makima. From her first appearance, you get the feeling that there is a lot more to her than she lets on, and is keeping many things from the other characters in the show, as well as the general audience.

Denji Power Chainsaw Man Episode 2

Two other characters also got an introduction in Chainsaw Man Episode 2, them being Aki and Power. Aki appears to be your somewhat stereotypical serious hater at first glance, but he is more interesting and less averse to comedy than other characters of his kind. He and Denji are going to develop some great chemistry during the latter part of this season, and one eagerly awaits that just to see the great things that can be done with his character. We haven’t seen him fight much beyond his few shots on Denji, but he should be pretty competent and exciting in that department once he gets going.

The other character is Power, and I predicted before ever having known anything about her as a character, meaning just looking at her, that she is going to be a fan-favourite and might even win Best Girl. There isn’t enough information about her yet to confirm that theory in my mind, but we are headed towards the right direction, at the very least. She is designed in a way that catches the attention of everyone and easily steals every scene that she is in. She might get a little overbearing for some, but as more gets revealed about her, I expect everyone to start liking her a lot more.

The production of the series is tremendous, as expected, but I am still surprised at how well the show’s tone is captured through the music. It is delightfully wacky and very fun to listen to, just like the show. Apparently, some people aren’t too pleased with the CGI that is being used in the show, and the only thing I can say to them is “find a better argument” because this seems to be in bad faith and disregards how smooth the non-CGI bits are. When has tying a tie looked so great? I say never.

Verdict

Chainsaw Man Episode 2 was a delightful watch. It was very funny and told a great story, introducing many new characters that are going to be anime staples for a long time.
