Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne Review: Diljit Dosanjh’s Comedy Failed to Live Upto Expectations

Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne is an Indian Punjabi comedy movie that premiered on January 6, 2023, on Zee5 for online streaming. Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron and written by Naresh Kathooria, the movie initially had a theatrical release on October 5, 2022, in India and Canada. The movie is produced by Thind Motion Films and Storytime Productions, which is Diljit Dosanjh’s home production company.

Diljit Dosanjh takes up the role of Jaggi, the lead character of the movie. Other recurring and supporting cast includes Sohail Ahmed as Iqbal, Sangtar Singh as Bhullar, Sargun Mehta, Kaul Lakhan, Gurpreet Bhangu, Jassica Gill, Balinder Johal, Devinder Dillon and Bhavkhandan Singh Rakhra.

With a total runtime of approximately 150 minutes, the movie was entirely filmed in  Vancouver, Canada.

The official synopsis of the movie is as follows:

From selling underwear to adopting a father for insurance benefits, Diljit will stop at nothing for him and his friends to become the three richest men in the world.

-Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne Review Contains No Spoilers-

I had a lot of expectations from the movie, considering how well-made and funny Punjabi comedy films usually are. It was disappointing, to say the least, as the story failed to amaze me in the slightest. The plot basically surrounds the life of three friends who are on a mission to become rich and famous as quickly as possible. Inspired by the looks of Elon Musk and Bill Gates, they cook up new business ideas every now and then, but the investors remain unwilling to make a bet on them.

After facing failure multiple times, they decide to take the route of dishonestly, and their plan involves insurance fraud. The script is weak and of full of plot holes, and it could be ignored if the punchlines were funny. The story was refreshing, but it quickly went downhill after the first few minutes. It failed to remain interesting and was incorporated with cliche gags.

The story moves along so fast that it gives the audience less time to process what is going on completely. The plot goes on a loop for an hour or so. Very little development of the characters is seen, and the addition of the songs is also unnecessary. Many parts of the film felt out of place and derailed entirely from the core storyline.

The most dissatisfying aspect of the movie is its climax. The poorly executed end will leave you annoyed and ruin the entire experience. The build-up is done immaculately, but the revelations fall flat. Moreover, the story becomes extremely predictable even though it tries to maintain its mystery.

However, Diljit Dosanjh continues to impress me with his performance. His comedic timing and charming personality made the movie tolerable. It is safe to say that he carried the film entirely. Renowned actor Pakistani actor Sohail Ahmed also did an amazing job. He maintained to stay in character throughout and did as the script demanded. Other supporting actors also delivered an adequate performance.

Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne Review: Final Thoughts

Diljit Dosanjh and Sargun Mehta, the lead duo supported by Pakistani legend Sohail Ahmed are bound to entertain you in the light-hearted Punjabi comedy. Consider leaving out any sense of logic and intelligence before watching it since the script does not contain any. With unfunny jokes and a predictable plot, the movie is bound to make you complain about its length and poor execution.

A few funny moments can still be found if you search for them. Nevertheless, the movie can still be enjoyed with one’s family and loved ones.
