Without further ado, let’s get right into the curated list.
Awkward Bollywood Award Show Moments
“Nepotism Rocks!“
Following the famous Koffee with Karan moment where Kangana Ranaut called out the prevalent nepotism in the Bollywood industry, Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan decided to bring it up during the IIFA Awards in 2017. They continued to mock the issue and chanted “Nepotism Rocks” along with Varun Dhawan. Additionally, they made fun of Kangana for being outspoken about the subject. While it was funny for some, the blatant jokes were unpleasant to many.
Ashutosh Gowarikar and Sajid Khan Fight
During Star Screen Awards, Jodhaa Akbar director Ashutosh Gowarikar received the award for best film, and during the speech, he confronted host Sajid Khan for his distasteful jokes and remarks. He said that making a mockery of the industry ridicules the award itself and that the hosts should do better. The silence that encompassed the hall was loud enough to make it clear that the moment made everyone extremely uncomfortable.
Vivek Oberoi’s Apology
After actor Vivek Oberoi accused Salman Khan of harassment during an elaborate press conference, the issue became a nationwide sensation. Surprisingly after a few months, at the end of his performance on an award show, the actor held his ears towards Salman, which is a common gesture made during an apology. It can be speculated that the artist was apologising for holding the press conference. It was both awkward and funny to witness that moment, and from the audience’s expressions, it was clear how everyone was confused by the untimely situation.
Alia Bhatt Singing Performance
Critically acclaimed actress Alia Bhatt is a great dancer but not the same can be said for her singing while dancing. The decision to make the artist sing during a high-intensity performance was not the right decision, and the result proves it. When she held the mic and started to sing mid-performance, it was excruciatingly painful to watch. The viewers also found it difficult to hide their true feelings.
Salman Khan vs Arijit Singh
Arijit Singh – in casual clothes and demeanour – it was not hard to figure out that he was disinterested in the award show. As he walked up to the stage, Salman asked him why he was sleeping during the show, and his simple reply was that the hosts (Salman and Riteish Deshmukh) made him fall sleep. Instantly the situation became tense, and Khan blamed the “boring” songs being played during the function. Even the background laugh track could not save it from becoming an uncomfortable situation.

KRK Baalti Award
A humorous gag award called the ‘Baalti Award’ in Gold Awards 2011 was presented to actor KRK; however, he did not take it well. The celebrity took offence to the simple joke and proceeded to cuss at the hosts. He took the award and threw it away, then walked out of the ceremony. An unpleasant vibe spread across the room, and everyone was left perplexed by the escalation of the situation.
The Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor Dance
Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were charming as ever while hosting the 2012 Filmfare Awards until they decided to ruin it when they walked out wearing exposing clothes with fake breasts, wigs and makeup depicting women in item songs. They did their awful performance while talking about the objectification of women in the industry, which made it even worse. The segment was uncomfortable and tone-deaf, to say the least.
Neil Nitin Mukesh vs Shah Rukh Khan
Neil Nitin Mukesh outrightly asked the hots to ‘Shut up’ after they made fun of his name. Shah Rukh and Saif were hosting the Filmfare Awards that night, and though most jokes landed right, this one in particular offended Neil. He proceeded to explain how the three names related to his father and grandfather, and he found it disrespectful when the hosts insensitively laughed at it.
The Feroz Khan Speech
After actress Sadhana received her award for Outstanding Contribution to Hindi Cinema in IIFA 2002, actor Feroz Khan stood up and took her back on stage for an impromptu speech. With slurry words, the artist managed to praise Sadhana; however, the room’s awkwardness could be felt through the screens.
Jaya Bachchan and Rekha Hug
Rekha found herself walking towards Jaya Bachchan for a warm hug when Amitabh Bachchan received his award for best actor at IIFA 2016. The moment was more surprising and awkward rather than wholesome, as the two were visibly uncomfortable with the interaction.
