The Traitors India Review: A Test of Patience

The Traitors India Review: An Indian adaptation of the internationally acclaimed reality TV series created by Marc Pos and Jasper Hoogendoorn, this 2025 Prime Video show will follow a bunch of celebrities who have been divided into “Innocents” and “Traitors”. The Innocents must try to figure out who the Traitors are and banish them before the latter group murders one of them at night and gets rid of the competition. Fighting over a cash prize of ₹1 crore, the series is a cat-and-mouse chase between 20 contestants.

The Traitors India Review

I love reality TV shows. I love their unserious vibe, the (entirely scripted) unscripted nature and the fact that the contestants will do anything in their power to get the 5 minutes of fame. I have watched too many, and at this point, nothing makes me feel particularly surprised. However, Prime Video’s The Traitors is a masterclass of cringe, consisting of some problematic and infamous celebrities whose reputations preceded them, while others are more or less forgettable.

The series, much like other Indian reality TV shows, is a test of patience primarily because of the people who take part in it. Everyone in the show thinks of themselves as some hotshot with the biggest and “wrinkliest” of brains, but most are more interested in throwing a fit at every perceived slight. The series, which will release three episodes in its first week, showcases the 20 contestants taking part in challenges to win gold or shields and discussing among themselves to understand who could be the Traitor.

However, all of these discussions mostly surround whom people dislike the most. The smallest of infractions result in name-calling and insults, and most don’t think about the bigger picture before fighting amongst themselves. As a result, there’s no smart gameplay at all. Sometimes one or two contestants do put their thinking caps on, but otherwise, it’s like Bigg Boss… well, maybe with less cringe.

It makes you wish for something more cerebral and complex, instead of this constant bickering that doesn’t make sense. All of these people are adults, but most of the time, you feel like you’re in a playground filled with 5-year-olds. The pettiness really shows. Another big part of the show is how unmemorable some of the contestants are. They stay in the background and don’t do anything to add to the runtime. It’s so boring and banal.

But then again, it’s a reality TV show. There’s not much to expect and even less that is shown to us. The unnecessary drama doesn’t gel well with the conversations that the contestants have, which are dull and without any deep thought.

I expect more from reality TV shows, I really do, because I enjoy watching them a lot. However, The Traitors is a test of patience with some dull and petty contestants who talk big game, but the reality is much different. Maybe the next 7 episodes will bring something different that will leave me stumped. We can only wait and watch.
