Attack 13 Review
Attack 13‘s thrill probably lies in the intense bullying that Jin and her friends go through rather than the horror elements that it later introduces. The ghostly apparitions are nothing short of silly, but they constantly remind us that some people just never learn how awful they are, regardless of which stage of existence they are.
Attack 13 follows Jin, a young woman who arrives at a new school and eventually becomes the target of the school bully, Bussaba. Unfortunately, when she ends her life, the students are haunted by her ghost, who only wants revenge. The premise is interesting and showcases the intense bullying that kids face in schools and how the adults in their lives fail at protecting them.
The film focuses on bringing forth as many gruesome scenes and jump scares as possible to leave viewers on edge, and there’s some tension in the air as well. But there isn’t a lot that makes this film stand out. First and foremost, I respect that the ghost is simply actress Lilly Ladapa Thongkham in makeup. I think it’s better than CGI, and although extremely goofy, I think it’s better than simply jumping into a CGI soup.
That being said, the film doesn’t do justice to the horror elements because she’s so omnipresent that it becomes silly at times. I think showing the ghost less would’ve done a better job of creating terror and tension, but we don’t get that because Bussaba is shown so much. Moreover, the film’s showcase of bullying ends quite early on in the runtime. Although it’s probably for the best, I think that’s where the true terror lies, as you see young women torturing their peers for some reason or another.
I also feel like we didn’t explore the relationship between the different characters enough, more so the terrifying reality of how a child’s life can be destroyed by the adults in their lives, finding ways to abuse them. Exploring these ideas could’ve been terrifying and reflect the state of reality, but the film chooses to instead focus on removing ghosts and whatnot, which, when presented like this, feels funny instead of terrifying.
That being said, I think the last twist is quite interesting and will leave viewers shocked. It makes you question who is moral and who isn’t, and whether there truly is any justice. The performances are also great, and Lilly Ladapa Thongkham, Aheye Korranid Laosubinprasoet and Perth Veerinsara Tangkitsuvanich are great. I further think that Hong’s mental ups and downs should’ve also been explored a bit more, but at least the addition is interesting, and it, thus, gets brownie points for that.
Final Thoughts
Attack 13 is fine and has some interesting ideas that it puts forth. However, in the end, it doesn’t deliver on the horror elements because it overshares Bussaba and makes things seem silly. I think it’s fine for a one-time watch, but nothing quite memorable.
