An Inconvenient Love Review: Donny Pangilinan, Belle Mariano Film is Cute

An Inconvenient Love is a romantic-comedy film directed by Petersen Vargas, written by Daisy Cayanan and Enrico Santos, and stars Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano in lead roles. The film has a runtime of 124 minutes. We previously saw the lead couple on Love is Colorblind.

Netflix’s description of the film reads:

Two young lovers agree to a casual relationship, but this convenient arrangement grows complicated as their romance reaches an expiration date.

– An Inconvenient Love Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

There’s something very peppy and full of heart about An Inconvenient Love. Maybe it’s the leads doing a fabulous job bringing their characters’ thoughts and feelings on-screen, maybe it’s the writing, or maybe it’s a combination of both; but the film has some deep emotional moments that will make you root for the leads, especially Manny, as they figure out their toxic home lives and their growing feelings for each other.

Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano feel like they were meant to be cast together in this film. Although the storyline is generic, but even generic films feel fresh when created with so much heart. Manny’s storyline, especially, has a lot of heart and soul, and Pangilinan does a swell job bringing forth those emotions. The scene with his mother broke my heart – he has just so sincere. This is also to say that Mariano is just as adorably sweet as well. The two look fantastic together.

An Inconvenient Love

At 2 hours and 4 minutes, An Inconvenient Love doesn’t feel all too heavy. Sure, 120 minutes seem like a big number, the movie is packed with cute moments that are relatable and make you think back to your silly high-school relationships. That being said, after the 10th mushy montage, it does start to get a little tiresome, and you want to see what else is there for the two to go through to bring their lives a full circle.

Manny and Ayef’s love story is cute and flirty, but man, after a while, you really want them to fight or do something to give the storyline an arc. I was a bit taken aback that, even at 40 minutes remaining, we were still doing the same thing over and over again. I think the story would have been better if they had made it tighter and cut down on a few montages. Their conflict makes sense, and these moments really are nice.

The leads’ broken relationship at home really give shape to the entire story, but I think Manny’s storyline could’ve been explored a little more instead of just conveniently ending it in 5 minutes. Ayef’s familial problems are also solved quite conveniently, but at least they are given some time to breathe. I think it really would’ve made more sense to explore the different things that the movie introduced throughout its runtime just a bit more to really flesh the characters out. Although, sure, you do feel for the youngsters and their rather sad homelives, the fact that they are solved so easily without any repercussions ends up being a sore spot.

An Inconvenient Love

An Inconvenient Love‘s ending is pretty generic, but they keep it cute and quite mushy. It’s nothing you won’t expect; in fact, that is exactly what you’d think would happen halfway through the runtime. I think it would’ve been sweet if we saw a little bit of long-distance life; it probably would’ve cemented their new relationship better. The fact that they decided to end it where they did simply seems just a smidge convenient for my taste. But then again, it’s not an ending that you’d end up nitpicking as a casual viewer.

Summing Up: An Inconvenient Love

If you’re in the mood for something sweet and not serious and don’t want to be too invested, An Inconvenient Love is going to be right up your alley. The lead pair is adorable together, and although there is not too much going on, given that the story is quite generic, it’s still a good timepass watch that will make you smile.

An Inconvenient Love is streaming on Netflix.
