Matchbox The Movie Review: Apple TV takes one of the most recognisable car brands and turns it into a globe-trotting adventure starring John Cena as spy and former soldier Sean Walker, who, along with his friends, is forced to steal a nuclear bomb to clear their names. The film brings together childhood nostalgia, spy movie chaos and the usual shenanigans that take place when a group of childhood friends find themselves caught in an unanticipated adventure.
The film contains many of the obvious clichés that viewers might expect to see in a spy thriller and a larger-than-life adventure that spirals into silliness at times. Matchbox: The Movie is a lighthearted romp that, for fans of Matchbox and Mattel, will be a nice distraction if nothing else.

The cast includes John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Golshifteh Farahani, and Danai Gurira. The action-comedy movie, directed by Sam Hargrave, is based on the toy brand Matchbox by Mattel.
Matchbox The Movie Review
Matchbox Turns Childhood Nostalgia Into a Spy Adventure
What one might enjoy about Matchbox The Movie is the fact that it doesn’t try to reinvent the genre or the Matchbox IP into something more elaborate than it needs to be. It’s clear that the makers know how nostalgic Mattel’s memorable toy brand can be and thus double down on that. The Matchbox connection becomes an integral part of the characters and defines their connection, working as the group’s foundation as well as making it a relatable scenario for many viewers. This is a smart setup since many viewers might find themselves in these characters and their experience, making them want to watch the movie more than the plot itself.

Of course, the action-adventure premise helps, and the relatable factor just adds to the elaborate adventure. Cena’s Sean Walker, an undercover CIA agent, returns to his small town and reconnects with his old friend group, unwittingly getting them pulled into a globetrotting adventure that, of course, will result in them saving the world. The dynamic of the tight-knit group being torn apart as they grew old and then reunited once again under extreme circumstances tugs on your heartstrings more than you realise.
For Apple TV, this seems like an accessible action movie that the platform wants people to watch just for the entertainment factor, instead of going too deep into anything. Thus, even viewers who don’t know too deeply about the brand can enjoy the film simply by recognising it.
John Cena Is Right at Home in the Action-Comedy Mode

Cena is a well-known face when it comes to the action-comedy genre, and Matchbox The Movie is no different. Leaning into the action and comedy even more, we see Cena as a capable action hero while his buddies, who are, well, regular people, give him the support that he needs to make this mission a success. The childhood friend group is enjoyable and welcoming and, despite the clichés, does leave a smile on the face.
This childhood group is possibly the most important part of the film since, beyond that, there’s not much to depend on. The spy thriller elements are quite weak and obvious, so the friendship angle does a good job of pushing the film over the edge of silliness. This is also what stops the movie from being a straightforward chase movie, as the chemistry between the characters is what makes it watchable and separates it from the rest.
Sam Hargrave Brings the Action Experience

Hargrave is known for the commercially successful Extraction franchise, starring Chris Hemsworth, and thus, viewers can guess what they are in for. His background as a stunt performer adds to the overall direction as the physical side of the stunt choreography is well-done and believable. The action set pieces are good enough as well, since this one caters more to a lighter and family-accessible concept. The PG-13 rating might not be for everyone, however, and viewers who enjoy more violence or action will find themselves somewhat disappointed.
Is Matchbox: The Movie Worth Watching?

While Cena is no stranger to the buddy comedy genre, Matchbox The Movie knows what it is and isn’t trying to reinvent anything. Thus, in the film’s defence, you know what you’re getting into. Its appeal comes from combining familiar ingredients into a glossy package and using the nostalgia factor to its benefit. Thus, the mix of an established toy brand and a well-recognised action star is a sure-fire way to win hearts. Director Sam Hargrave, too, is very well-versed in action films and thus brings a ton of energy to an otherwise underwhelming film.
The simplicity is probably Matchbox The Movie‘s greatest win, and if viewers aren’t looking for complex storytelling or character development, then the lighthearted premise and big stunts might be just what you need for the weekend. It’s an uncomplicated action flick.
