Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 2 Review- Sword Arts

Michella wink Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 2

If I had to describe this episode in one word, it would be “surprising”. The first episode was fun, if a little generic, and didn’t make one expect much from the future entries that the show promised. Keeping that in mind, episode two of the show was an absolute revelation. It was a fantastic watch that did absolutely everything right and succeeded in making this story one of the most intriguing to keep tabs on this season.  There is a lot to discuss here, but let us start by complimenting the entire concept the show is built upon.

The twist in the magical formula that Reign of the Seven Spellblades brings is a highly unique and interesting one, and after witnessing it for the first time, one can only wonder how this show is the first one to think of this. Suddenly, as the magic in this show was given an explanation, Nanao’s inclusion in the story and the way she was selected also started to make a lot of sense. Get this- their wands are also swords, and they can slice the absolute hell out of each other if they don’t want to or can’t use magic!

Oliver Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 2

Innovative? Absolutely. Insane? A little. Intriguing? You bet. This episode also did a lot to establish the personalities of the main characters a lot, and surprisingly, alongside Oliver, the character given the most time and attention in this episode is the smart, talented, and popular Michela McFarlane. She appears to have a larger role in the series than she initially appeared to, and she is more than just the mom-of-the-group kind of character. With the way Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 2 worked on establishing her, she is going to be either an antagonist or one of Oliver’s closer confidantes and no in-between.

There was also a very potent scene between Oliver and Nanao, which obviously had a lot of meaning and was important for both of their characters, even though the impression it did end up leaving could have been more complete and conclusive. It was something that was fun while it was happening, but as it is gone, I fail to see a reason behind it taking place at all, and I hope that it will be explored in some more detail in the future. There is a lot more to Oliver and Nanao’s relationship than this.

The production quality was once again very solid, and animated the various aspects featured in this episode very well. The fierce fight between Oliver and Nanao, alongside the different classes like Biology and Charms, received good representations. They also served as a way to advance multiple characters at once, and we now have someone to root against and what makes Katie tick. Non-essential information, of course, but welcome nonetheless. Overall, this was a very solid episode which was much better than the pilot and promised a lot of good events for the future.

Verdict

Reign of the Seven Spellblades Episode 2 was a very good time and established a world and a magic system that sounds like a lot of fun with much potential. The future of the show looks bright.

  1. Novel reader here. You’ll get Nanao’s half of what happened between them in the duel next episode, guaranteed, and I estimate episode 5 or 6 for the full reason why he rejected dueling her again (besides bloody obviously not wanting them to kill each other). As the scenes with Teresa Carste in the first two episodes should have indicated, he has his own reason for being here, and dying in a duel would rather defeat the purpose.

Aside from that, great review. I was a little iffy on the pilot episode but this one had me cheering.
