Insomniacs After School Episode 7 Review- The Fireworks Star

As soon as the setting for this episode was revealed in the form of Magari’s friends wearing Yukatas, a smile spread across my face as I knew we were in for a great time. Festival episodes are great even in series that are less than stellar and a chance for the actual special shows to go a level beyond in a few departments. This episode was not a disappointment in any sense, as it was extremely fun to watch and even moved the story forward by a lot, whereas these kinds of episodes are usually just for character development.

True to the setting, Insomniacs After School Episode 7 was also the prettiest the show has ever looked, and that is a high bar to clear. The beautiful lighting, immaculate colouring, and tasteful angles lit up the screen and provided plenty of eye candy. There were several continuous shots, and the show didn’t even become a slideshow like a few others when it got to the shenanigans that the friends were doing while watching the fireworks. All this while not holding back on the tender moments between Isaki and Ganta.

To discuss the elephant in the room for this episode, I am a little worried now. To those of us who enjoy slice-of-life shows and have seen quite a few in the past (so basically, all of you), there is a very different kind of shiver that runs through our spines when any kind of disease or illness is mentioned in a show. Once in the play, it acts as the sadder version of Chekhov’s gun, as you are just waiting for the disease to take over and leave everyone hurting in its wake. I hope that the same fate doesn’t await our favourite protagonists in this show.

This was also the first episode where, because of Chekhov’s Disease, we learned some more about Magari’s vulnerabilities and the reason her insomnia exists in the first place. The show did a phenomenal job in showcasing even more of her character using this reveal, and everything she did and revealed about herself fit perfectly with the Magari Isaki we have come to know and love in the show. She is someone who deserves the world and is left to suffer in it and is the perfect folly to Ganta’s general apathy due to his issues.

One thing that was absolutely adorable about this episode and the series as a whole is how good our two protagonists are for each other, and not in a way that makes them twins from different mothers. They complete each other and are good for each other in a way that is seldom seen in lesser shows. The entire final sequence in Insomniacs After School Episode 7, where Ganta comes up with a plan to allow them both to talk to each other without worrying about each other’s sleep, was magical, and I hope there are many more moments like that on the way for this show.
Verdict
Insomniacs After School Episode 7 was among the prettiest and most magical episodes you’ll see this season. This was slice-of-life perfection.
