Ooku the Inner Chambers tells the tale of a Japan in the Edo Period where a strange Red Pox disease kills only the men. After 80 years post the disease’s outbreak, the male population has decreased immensely leaving the women to take on the works that men used to do. Even the role of the Shogun (military ruler) is carried on by women. On the other hand, men are asked to take care of household work and take care of children. Moreover, the beautiful men of the country are sent to the Shogun’s inner chamber to serve.

In the newly released trailer, the eighth Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune enters a chamber with 3000 beautiful men bowing down to her. She simply calls them frivolous dressed-up men. Then the narration explains how in the country, men are rare yet there are 3000 beautiful men coming in to serve the Shoguns. These men are called the Ooku. Then to see whether the country has always been like this, the eight shogun reads the history to go back in time.

Apparently, it all started when the third shogun Lemitsu was born. Until then men were in power, doing their work and taking care of women. Due to the disease, Lemitsu is forced to become the next Shogun. They cut her hair, beat, and train vigorously. We also see how she breaks down knowing her fate as the next ruler. This responsibility forces her to sacrifice her womanhood. She also is seen falling in love with Arikoto but due to her Shogun standard, her romance had to die.

The narrator questions the viewers that when the history is unraveled what will be found? Then the scene cuts to the current eighth Shogun asking the 3000 men whether anyone objects to her as the ruler and the men remain bowed.

The trailer looks fantastic as usual because anime creations never fail to disappoint. The depiction of a fictional Japan with men doing all the so-called feminine works whereas women protecting men is a new concept. Yôko Satô has done an excellent job of creating the character designs.

Ooku the Inner Chambers will be released on Netflix on June 29, 2023. What do you think about the trailer? Do you think the anime will do justice to the original Manga? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
