Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Beautiful Sadness

Faputa is here to avenge everything her mother suffered at the hands of Ganja, as Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 10 sees one of the most emotional showdowns in the show’s history. Let’s see how it went down in this review!

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 10 Overview

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 10 Title

The best anime of 2017 and one of the greatest shows of this generation, Made in Abyss, makes a return to our screens with Made In Abyss Season 2, titled Made in Abyss Golden City of the Scorching Sun. The series is once again being helmed by veteran director Masayuki Kojima who also directed the previous seasons alongside other classic anime such as Monster and Black Bullet. The season is also referred to as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou in original Japanese.

The season is also being animated by Studio Kinema Citrus, which was behind the first season of the show alongside other shows like The Rising Of The Shield Hero. The series is based on a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi. This episode is also known as Made in Abyss Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou Episode 10 and Made in Abyss Golden Sun Episode 10. It can sometimes be hard to describe how good this show is because of how deep its roots lie. The depth of the character development and worldbuilding is so great that the show managed to draw real tears out of my eyes because of characters that had never had a single line of dialogue in the show before this. The tiny critters were barely visible in precious few frames before this episode and still managed to leave a humongous impact on this episode and the show as a whole. That is the power of this show.

Nanachi and Mitty are a cheat code to emotions that the show liberally uses to great effect. Whether it be hundreds of other children being turned into the same form in Dawn Of The Deep Soul or Mitty’s spiritual return in this season, looking at the two star-crossed friends never fails to elicit a response, and this episode was no different. Nanachi made a promise to Mitty in the fifth layer, and to fulfil that promise would mean leaving a part of her behind in the sixth layer. That scene was one of the most powerful of the entire season, and when you think of how much ground that covers, that’s when it hits you.

The majority of this episode was spent finally explaining the pasts of Reg and Faputa. The promise that Faputa talked about when she first met Reg was explored right after we first realised how disastrous that promise was for the world that existed inside Irumyuui. Disaster really is the perfect word to describe what went down in this episode, as Faputa unleashed all the wrath she had been saving all those years into the inhabitants of Irumyuui, whose efforts to fight back all resulted in torn body parts and blood. This has never been a show to shy away from the gore, and it wasn’t going to start now.

We didn’t get to spend a lot of time with Faputa and Reg again. Still, the time that we got and the scenes that we witnessed were enough to make it clear how elated Faputa must have felt when she saw that Reg had returned and how quickly that elation must have turned to the feeling of betrayal and disappointment when she realised he didn’t remember anything that they shared. Faputa is a tortured character, and any ounce of hope she gets must be a huge deal for her. To have even that ripped away from her must be unimaginably hard.

The feeling of helplessness was high in this episode, as every living creature in the sixth layer found themselves to be unable to face the wrath of Faputa. That is, every living creature except one- Reg. Wazukyan referred to Reg as the king to Faputa’s queen in the previous episode, and those comparisons made a lot more sense in this episode. The confrontation between the two was tremendous, and the show is now set up to have some extraordinarily hard-hitting final episodes. To say that I am beyond excited would be an understatement.

Verdict

Made In Abyss Season 2 Episode 10 was another phenomenal outing that focused on helplessness as a motif and went hard into how every single character was experiencing it or had experienced it in some form.
