Disney + Hotstar’s 2024 Review: Gritty Thriller Shot On Phone?

Directed by Rohin Raveendran Nair, 2024 has been produced by Vikramaditya Motwane’s Andolan Films in association with Odd and Even Productions, and the Big Bad Wolf Studios. The unique thing about this film? This sixty-minute thriller has been completely shot on OnePlus 9 Pro 5G and also happens to be the only feature film known as the “Shot on OnePlus” film.

Disney + Hotstar describes the film as

It’s 2024 and a muted virus is turning Mumbai into a death zone. Meanwhile, four friends try to find each other and get to the last train to escape the city.

Set in the year 2024, the film revolves around four orphans who grew up in an orphanage in Dharavi. Director Rohin Raveendran Nair takes the audience on a dystopian journey focusing upon the struggles of his characters in a dangerously toxic environment, a result of the destruction brought about by a mutating virus! Sounds familiar? Finally, someone made a film that closely shows a darker picture of what people have been living with for nearly two years now and that remains the best thing about Disney + Hotstar’s 2024!

2024

The other reason why 2024 deserves a watch is simply because of how it has been shot. Earlier this year OnePlus 9 Pro 5G was launched and soon it was claimed to be one of the best phones in the world and not just that, the phone also became popular because of its amazing camera that was dubbed to be the best camera that money could buy in the world. Well, that sounds pretty impressive! So it was extremely interesting to find out about OnePlus’ collaboration with Vikramaditya Motwane.

Vikramaditya Motwana’s name is associated with great cinemas like Dev D, Udaan, Lootera and naturally when a filmmaker of his expertise chose OnePlus 9 Pro 5G for shooting 2024, there was only anticipation among cine buffs because this was something new happening in history of Indian cinema. Motwane even spoke about this at length. He said,

As a filmmaker, I have always been interested in using the latest technology and this film is a story where the use of the new OnePlus device fits beautifully

2024

Independent filmmaker and cinematographer, Rohin Raveendran Nair opts for storytelling that’s gritty and intense in his debut directorial feature. Much like his earlier short directorial ventures like Little Hands (2013), Paijana (2016) and The Booth (2019), this action-thriller consciously or unconsciously gives out the same vibes – tight frames, dark plotlines and the thrill of survival against all odds with Bombay as the omnipresent backdrop manages to keep the audience hooked till the very end.

Looking at 2024 as an individual film by Rohin Raveendran Nair is a great experience but in case you are familiar with this young director’s earlier works then 2024 becomes just another feature made from his comfort zone with the new phone becoming the major key factor behind watching the film – every time there’s a visually aesthetic frame within the film, you will be left wondering about the fact that the movie happens to be full feature shot on a mobile phone!

Summing Up 2024: Too Relatable To Skip

2024

Yes, the plot will resonate with most of us living in the global pandemic – to even think that there might be something out there that’s worse than Covid 19 is truly dystopian. Watch 2024 because it’s the most relatable depiction of the times we are living and it also happens to be shot on a phone!

2024 is streaming on Disney + Hotstar.
