MX Player’s Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai Review: Horror? Comedy?

Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai is a horror-comedy series written and directed by Gaurav S. Sinha and starring Swara Bhaskar, Sumeet Vyas, Naveen Kasturia, Amol Parashar and Ashish Verma alongside other cast members.

We have all come across media where we see bachelors and their famed “brotherhood” – a term where no one exists, not your chacha, chachi, mummy or even your girlfriend or friend with benefit. It is famed to be a world in itself, a world which is similar to other brotherhoods of the same nature but still distinctly different. Many movies have explored this bond and explored it well. However, when brotherhood is used only as a ruse to elicit shits and giggles, and not even good ones at that, then that’s definitely a problem.

Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai is a tiny web series. I say tiny because the 5-episode-long series, each episode hardly being 20 minutes long, goes by like a breeze. The casting is great as well, with everyone in the show a regular in other streaming services as well. However, Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai, trying to be a horror-comedy, is neither and the logic is so flawed, or rahter missing, that it’s absolutely confusing.

The series follows four friends, Nikhil, Subbu, Kavi and Sanki. They are in the famed “brotherhood” and their friendship is such that nothing can tear them apart. We never see the background of this friendship or how it came to be. We are not shown the friendship in general well either – the series tells us that they’re really great friends and that’s that.

I sometimes wonder whether these friendships have any boundaries. The friends do unthinkable things to each other – they drug their colleagues at a party at their place, get everyone fired, steal each other’s girlfriends, lie to each other’s girlfriends and do many such shenanigans. However, the brotherhood remains intact. I wonder where we draw the line with these things. Is roofie-ing women to get in their pants funny or peak comedy? I must have missed that class in university.

We move on from this to the horror element. Listen, I know I shouldn’t expect some shit-in-my-pants horrifying thing. I know, I get it. But Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai does absolutely crazy things that are neither horrifying nor funny. Swara Bhaskar in the typical ghostly getup isn’t funny nor scary. Also, there’s a scene here where Sanki tries to peek down Mausam’s top while she’s possessed. Last time I checked, a possessed woman cannot give her consent and thus that would count as molestation… but what would I know?

The problem with Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai is that it doesn’t really care. It cares neither about the plot nor the execution. There’s no parity between whatever is going on here and it jumps from one plot to another. Don’t get me wrong, it might be funny sometimes, but here it just seems half-baked. It’s too casual and although I do like casual comedies that don’t bother the mind, this one just makes you feel stupid.

Summing up: Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai

Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai

Aapkey Kamrey Mein Koi Rehta Hai is too casual for its own good. There’s a nonchalance to it that’s glaring that makes the audience feel like they are idiots. Things just happen for no reason and the narrative shifts from one thing to another without any parity or direction. There are a few funny moments in the first episode or two but after that, the makers just give up.

With a star-cast that has proven itself capable more than once in different shows and movies, this series does nothing to make them prove their mettle. The acting is as inconsistent as the story and that’s quite sad because I like all of the people working here. It is, honestly, a shame.
