Ziam Review: Ziam is a dystopian thriller that explores the horrors of a zombie outbreak born from humanity’s desperate attempt to solve a global food crisis. When a scientist named Vasu introduces bioengineered fish as a revolutionary food source, things quickly spiral into chaos as the experiment backfires, infecting people and turning them into zombies.

Having a new zombie movie in the market is nothing new, as it is clearly a genre that has been utilised and overutilised for a long time. Here as well, we get to see a deeply action-packed movie that is set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse. On paper, this concept sounds pretty cool as it can be interesting to see the approach of a skilled fighter against these man-eating monsters with superhuman strength. And, the movie actually starts on a pretty promising note, where we see the world is already in a dark place without even having to go through a zombie outbreak.

Here, we see the story of a man, Singh, who just wants to survive in a post-apocalyptic world with his beloved, where food shortage is the new normal. People fight like cats and dogs for even insects in search of some nutrition. However, thanks to a man called Vasu, the problem of food might see a lasting solution very soon. He has come up with a type of fish that can be even eaten raw, but the results were far from ideal, as it only escalated the already dire situation of humans.

The film places a strong emphasis on action, with its brooding male lead often choosing physical confrontation over dialogue as a way to process his inner conflicts. This approach gives the character a rugged intensity, but it also limits emotional depth and character development. The action sequences themselves are well-executed in terms of choreography. However, they lack a distinctive style or creative flair that would make them truly memorable.

Beyond the action, the plot progression feels quite straightforward, adhering closely to familiar genre conventions. There are few, if any, twists or unexpected turns to keep us guessing. In fact, I was able to foresee most of the major plot points well in advance, including the ending.

Perhaps the best aspect of this movie was the acting of the actors who really did their part well. I specifically loved the actress who played the role of Rin, as her desperation and emotions came through very beautifully. The child actor also did a remarkable job in incorporating innocence into this zombie film, where I catch myself rooting for his survival the most.

But the most interesting part for me was the very natural and intelligent inclusion of romance in a world which is hopeless from the beginning. Though you might think that it won’t work, surprisingly, it works very well.  I completely believed the bond between the two main characters and also between Vasu and his wife. Vasu’s sacrifice and decision not to leave his ailing wife, no matter the situation, was one of the most powerful moments in the movie.

Verdict

All in all, this was a pretty mediocre and very simple zombie movie that does not showcase anything that you have not seen before. It doesn’t feature any unique elements that can separate its entity from other zombie franchises, and that is why the movie is pretty forgettable.

That said, if you’re a die-hard fan of zombie films and enjoy the genre no matter how convoluted or predictable the plot might be, Ziam is still worth a watch.
