Everyone wonders what they actually do at work and how their efforts contribute to society. Well, this upcoming project will show just that. Netflix is coming out with yet another docu-series titled Working What We Do All Day, and this time it features the wonderful Barack Obama, who will be hosting this series. It is directed by Caroline Suh and will contain four episodes, each 45 minutes long.
What is Working What We Do All Day Based On?
While this series is based on the 1974 nonfiction book titled Working by Studs Terkel, the changes in workspace and technology lend the time to share how the world has expanded beyond understanding. The workforce and culture at that time were completely different. Obama, who hosts the show, will be bringing some of the elements of exploration from this book, like oral history as a method of storytelling and delving deep into the lives of a modern American working in a contemporary landscape.

Working What We Do All Day Plot/Synopsis
The trailer shows us the former President speaking with the people at work and how their lives are constructed. Our first look from the trailer is the fact that it is constructed like a fictional television series rather than a documentary. Following the Vox style, this trailer starts off with the host making a comment about how our work has consequences larger than us and contributes to the world in ways we would not have imagined.
Right from the beginning, waking up in the morning, the commute and the commencement of the work day, all contribute to the way we come to the workplace and the energy we bring in there. This series also explores how the different work streams fare differently on the financial and satisfaction scale. The series takes us deep into the inequity across the three big industries, including tech, home care and hospitality.
Every good documentary has a fundamental question, and for this one, it is “What makes a good job good?” While there are people slogging in different parts of the same workspace, somehow, the distribution of wealth and amenities don’t seem to come up in tandem with that. While asking some of the interviewees, most seemed gleeful and happy if they were able to make minimum wage or just check the bottom tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs in order to be happy.
This series seems less about pinning the blame and more about exploring how certain systems are constructed and interact with one another in order to create an atmosphere of productivity. Perhaps, there may be some exploration of how capitalism is yet another hurdle in the life of a working American.
