This Turkish series on Netflix tries to tackle the mother-daughter relationship in an intense drama-thriller, and the Who Were We Running From review explores whether it does a good job. Based on the 2007 novel by Perihan Madenb, this show is directed by Umut Aral and Gökçen Usta.

-Who Were We Running From? Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-
Thriller series that feature women who do bad things. This writer was already sold on the premise. Female rage is rarely seen on screen, and seeing a character who is so open to causing chaos and standing her ground should be fun. Still, it leaves a bittersweet taste when we realise that the whole idea of the mother and her daughter roaming around is to keep a low profile and be on the run.
Not keeping a low profile is just the beginning of a long list of practical inconsistencies that make the series bland and set the scenes in poor taste. Moreover, the show is constructed in such a tumultuous manner that audiences lose sight of the premise by the end. There are some gaping plot holes and a lack of satisfying resolution or cliffhanger. The show ends on a note that neither gives closure nor incites a burning curiosity to consume the next season.
However, the acting and the writing truly save the show from further downfall. The dialogues are written with thought and consideration for every character, and the performers do a stellar job at bringing the words to life. Additionally, the characters are written and constructed very well. They have distinct personalities that stem from formative childhood experiences while providing them with the opportunity to evolve and change throughout the season.

The creators of this show had a lot in mind while making it because its potential is clearly visible on screen. Since the book on which this show is based is old, they should have written it in a more modern context instead of sticking to the source material. They could have also decided to base this show during that time, allowing the actors to exist in the early 2000s fashion of Turkey.
If there were to be a second season of this show, there are some things that they could definitely explore. However, since the first season has such an air of finality, a season 2 greenlight would be an indication that the production house is looking to make some more money from this show than actually giving people a story that would be interesting to see.
Although this show does an excellent job showing how past trauma affects our actions and behaviours in the present time. It also allows the characters to build tension and carry a scene just using their past experiences as a compass. Once again, the character construction is flawless because the entire show passes the Bechdel test, but the storyline is developed so poorly that it may be hard to separate the two while watching.

Who Were We Running From Review Final Thoughts
In all honesty, this show is a pretty average watch. It isn’t too interesting to keep your attention, but it isn’t so boring that you would have to stop watching. This writer would have assumed the show to take a little different direction when it came to using the premise of a woman hotel-hopping worldwide, but this storyline and this trope didn’t go too well together.
Furthermore, there are so many ways people can poke holes in the realism of this story that viewers will already lose the suspension of disbelief required to come to a show like this. While it may be removed from our personal experiences, it still feels like the show struck out because it ignored certain universal rules of suspense and drama thrillers.

Is there a character to root for in this show? No! There are characters to root against, including those ditzy dames in episode one who kept overwhelming those two with hapless praise of Bambi. Cmon!!!
The mother is stunningly beautiful…especially in beautiful black” high fashion”. The daughter is ordinary looking…reminds me of talented but homely Liza Minelli. As noted by others…the 2 are never inconspicuous…Bambi dressed in a child’s costume…most conspicuous. After some committed killings it’s still never clear who or what started them running in the first place. So much is implausible but interesting to watch.. Beautiful photography
