What If Season 3 Episode 8 Ending Explained and Recap
Episode 8 starts with the Watcher being introduced to his new role by the Emninence, mentioning that although not everyone can handle taking in so much, he can since he is a disciple of the Order of the Watchers. Although the Watcher is unsure of his new role, the Emninence mentions that asking “what if” doesn’t matter. The Watcher mentions that to watch over everyone, he must become no one, prompting the Emninence to declare that he is ready to take on his task.
Back to the present, the Watcher and the Eminence, the Incarnate and the Executioner argue about the validity of his decisions and giving away their secrets to mortal beings. Although the Watcher takes them to be miracles, the others do not agree with such claims. They call his decisions unnecessary but deem Peggy to be the most dangerous, bringing her in front of the Watcher. They tell him that no one’s lives matter for a Watcher but Peggy disagrees, reminding him that he taught her that “no one is no one”. Hearing this, the Eminence tells him that this is why he will have to die.

Just as they are about to get rid of him, Ultron and the others arrive leaving all of them shocked. As the two of them make a run for it to the ship, Ultron stays behind to stop the three others. After a tearful reconciliation, Byrdie asks the Watcher where they can go, but he tells her that is no “where to” anymore. However, Byrdie lets them know that she will take them through the seams of the multiverse in order to lose the Emninence, leaving them shocked. Although the Watcher is skeptical, Peggy decides to take them to Stephen Strange’s universe so that he can shape it to restrict their powers.
However, before they is able to get to the universe, the Emninence and others make their way to the ship, stopping them mid track. They crash on an unknown universe and then begin to fight with the three celestial beings, ending in them almost dying. The Watcher proposes that they take the oath in order to survive. Without much choice, the four of them do as they are told and just as the three beings end up destroying them, they all come back as Watchers. A fight erupts but even after being clearly overpowered, they refuse to give up. In the end, however, Uatu asks them to reconsider their stance. The three take this chance to take the last step – combining their powers to remove every trace of them from every universe ever.

As parts of them start withering away, Peggy fights against the three of them and sacrifices herself to save her friends. When everyone comes to, the Emninence realises that his powers aren’t working anymore. Uatu realises that they are in Stephen Strange’s universe now. Finally conceding defeat, the Eminence asks Uatu how he learned so much about people and their ways and is told that there is something to learn from every corner of the multiverse. He promises to share everything that he has learnt with him, asking him to see the meaning behind things instead of just watching. The Emninence takes him up on his offer and the two of them watch the sunrise together.
Later, the group bids farewell to Peggy and the Watcher wistfully mentions that it feels like Peggy is watching over him. The episode ends with Uatu taking about the endless possibilities of the multiverse and how all of these are realities in their own right.
What If Season 3 Episode 8 Review

The episode, somehow, felt extremely convenient and oddly an expected outcome. The fight between the Watchers, everyone suddenly becoming a Watcher out of thin air and then Peggy sacrificing herself for her friends leading to the Emninence swiftly agreeing to learn from Uatu felt really easy. I feel like with a series that prides itself for being all about possibilities and whatnot, I expected it to have something truly out of the world (pun intended) and although it’s quite dramatic and action-packed, it lacked the punch. All in all, I enjoyed What If Season 3 finale, but I will say that the season had better episodes than this one.
