Urusei Yatsura Episode 9 Review and Recap – The Angry Beast

This episode showed a new character who we never thought we would meet. We met someone from Lum’s past, who was only mentioned in the previous episode.

When this episode first started, we saw Cherry giving a premonition that something bad was going to happen. He goes to Ataru’s house and delivers this message when Ataru and Lum are in the middle of a quarrel. Apparently, Shinobu is supposed to visit Ataru and thus, he is cleaning the heck out of his room. But the weather is ominous, and after learning about Cherry’s predictions, we also think about what might transpire.

Elsewhere, Shinobu meets a giant tiger/ox monster whom she escorts to Ataru’s house as he wishes to meet Lum. This monster is none other than Lum’s ex-fiance, whom she dumped for Ataru. He is a shape-shifting alien who takes on the beastly form when he gets angry and also gobbles down any, and every food within close vicinity.

But no, the problem is not his appearance, as he is perhaps the most handsome man in Urusei Yatsura. It is the fact that he acts like an animal and loses his cool too often that Lum hates him. He, on the other hand, absolutely loves Lum. And Ataru is also happy that now, he can just do away with his nagging wife. But sadly, Rei hates Ataru as Lum left him for a man like Ataru.

In the first part, we just see this new character coming into the frame and setting up the stage for the next part, as the later half also features him when he reaches Ataru’s school. As Rei enters Ataru’s class in his demon form, he scares everyone. But the moment he reverts back to his original self, the girls get smitten with his appearance, and even Mendo accepts that Rei is indeed very handsome.

This part was very funny as, till now, Mendo thought that only a handsome man is the best of all, but this time he acknowledges that it is not the face of the person but the monetary situation that makes him the best. Even he could not fight Rei on an appearance level.

This episode was honestly ridiculous, and I have long decided not to look for any logic when watching these episodes. Perhaps the most absurd thing was when Ataru’s mother falls for Rei as well.

Verdict

A new character joined this already cast-heavy series, and I am again not at all complaining. I have already said how absurd this whole franchise is and that is the key point of this anime. It goes on following its own pace delivering a non-linear storyline that is nonetheless entertaining. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
