Blurr Review: Only if One Could Blur Out the Memories of Taapsee Pannu’s Film!

Blurr movie on Zee5 stars Taapsee Pannu as Gayatri/Gautami, Gulshan Devaiah as Neel, Kruttika Desai as Mrs Solanki, Abhilash Thapliyal as Deepak and others. It is a remake of the 2010 Spanish Thriller called Julia’s Eyes. The Hindi remake is helmed by Ajay Bahl, who wrote the screenplay with Pawan Soni. The cinematography is by Sudhir K Chaudhary.

The film marks Taapsee’s debut as a producer with Outsiders Films. It is also produced by Zee Studios and Echelon Productions. The synopsis reads, “With progressive blindness setting in, Gayatri has to find answers to her twin sister’s unlikely death. As the lines of reality keep getting blurred, is she ready to look the truth in the eye?”

Zee5’s Blurr Movie Review Contains Mild Spoilers

Blurr is a story of two twins – Gautami and Gayatri. Both sisters have a degenerative disease that turns them blind. The story begins with a visually impaired Gautami being troubled by someone we can’t see on screen. Gautami tries to kill herself by hanging herself, but someone kicks the stool under her legs, killing her. Gayatri, her sister who lives far away, wakes from a nightmare. She senses something has happened to Gautami.

Gayatri and her husband Neel immediately head to Nainital. Gayatri is devastated to learn about her twin sister’s death. But she is certain that someone murdered Gautami. Gayatri feels that someone is watching her every move as she tries to look into her sister’s death. Just like her sister, Gayatri’s vision also starts blurring out. Finding answers becomes a challenge as Gayatri has to fight the unknown and unseen person she believes harmed her twin.

Blurr’s unsettling opening sequence makes you hope for a solid plot all the way through. Unfortunately, that never happens. The first hour of the Taapsee starrer takes you through Gayatri as she searches for answers but frequently makes silly and questionable choices. She tries to convince her husband, Neel, that someone is spying on her. However, the dialogues are poor and never allows the protagonist to articulate properly.

Blurr Still 1

The film has needless jump scares and loud background music. You aren’t sure if it’s a thriller or a horror movie half the time. I wish the focus were more on giving us a meaningful, consistent plot than a mishmash of genres. We are supposed to feel sorry for Gayatri because of everything she has to go through. But until the very end, I was infuriated at her stupid choices!

The worst part of Blurr is the climax. In one scene, Gayatri has the chance to attack the person who is attempting to kill her. However, she only stabs them once before running. Gayatri calls the police from someone else’s house to get help in yet another ridiculous scene. But rather than saying where she is, she keeps repeating phrases like “meri help kijiye” She had time to give information. However, the writers and director were unwilling to give her a chance.

Despite playing twins, Taapsee Pannu doesn’t have the opportunity to perform anything particularly noteworthy due to poor screenplay. Gulshan Devaiah, a terrific actor, deserves much better than this.

Blurr Review: Final Thoughts

Zee5’s recent release is so terrible overall that you wish you could blur the memories of watching it. Horror movie protagonists frequently make poor choices. However, Taapsee’s Gayatri makes them all seem clever because of her dumb decisions. The plot may have seemed intriguing on paper, but it was badly executed and miserable.

It is sad that filmmakers and production houses often look at OTT platforms as a medium to release content that’s not good enough. It’s high time these platforms are not treated as dumpsters.

The film is now streaming on Zee5.
