Urusei Yatsura Episode 5 Review and Recap – The New Nurse
Urusei Yatsura was able to deliver a delightful and entertaining episode this week as well. Episode 5 starts with its typical gag-humour elements that showcase just how much of a lecherous person our protagonist is.
The moment he enters the school, Ataru gets to know from his classmates that a new and gorgeous nurse has come to school. And Ataru being Ataru, goes absolutely feral and reaches the nurse’s office to propose to her without even seeing her face.

There, unsurprisingly, we see all the boys, along with Mendo, already offering marriage proposals to this new faculty member. We, with Ataru, find out that the new nurse is actually Sakura, the shrine maiden whom we saw a few episodes back.
What I have noticed in this anime is that whenever Sakura is present, we are bound to see some supernatural or ghost-related elements. Similarly, here as well, we saw a hilarious paranormal activity of a pair of cursed boxing gloves that somehow ends up in Ataru’s hands.
This part of the episode displayed the lighthearted comedy that you already expect from this franchise. The humorous bits, despite being simple, manage to make you laugh. But this was not my favourite part of the episode, as the second half unexpectedly took the prize for me.
I was caught by surprise when this anime pulled off one of the cutest interactions between their main couple. The second half might have started like every episode of Urusei Yatsura with a penchant for comedy, but it definitely ended on a romantic note.

We finally got to see some development between our central pair and just how much in love Lum is with Ataru. She has always been selfish and quite imposing with her one-sided affection, but here we witness that she genuinely cares for his well-being.
In the end, the perfect amount of fluff portrayed here made me giggle like a fool and turned me into a shipper for Ataru and Lum. So the divert from the usual portrayal of random flings felt quite fresh for this anime.
Verdict
This episode was certainly my favourite so far, maybe because I finally understood the dynamic between Lum and Ataru. Till now, the romance was not illustrated in a serious way and has always been shown in a flirtatious light. It was used as a medium to deliver comedic punchlines, but from this episode, it finally felt like a proper connection had finally formed between the central couple. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
