Urusei Yatsura Episode 3 Review – The New Student

This episode introduced a new character that has taken hold of our attention from the very first episode. Mendo, the new rich kid, is anything but humble about himself. Not only does he make a grand entrance on his very first day, but he dares to charm almost every girl in his vicinity.

Sadly for Ataru, he starts to hit on Shinobu as well, but it is not something Mendo does knowingly, as it is out of habit that he acts so thickskinned. The person Mendo actually falls for is our heroine Lum, who obviously does not give him the time of her day. On the other hand, Shinobu, too, falls for Mendo’s handsome face and flirting skills and comically moves on from Ataru.

Now a weird love quadrangle forms where Lum wants Ataru, who desires Shinobu, who likes Mendo, who falls for Lum. This entire mess creates quite a few hilarious punches throughout the episode, and we see how odd and drastic the characters are.

The first half mostly deals with Mendo’s feelings and, his quest to become the class president. This quest though does not result in any success, as he fails because of Ataru’s idiocy and Lum’s powers.

Then comes the next half, where the funny elements are a bit more successful in making you laugh with the character’s antics. The four in love enter a cave with their own hidden intentions that do not turn out as they assumed. By the end, a sudden move by Lum sets the next episode in motion.

The slapstick comedy is the core of this anime and it sometimes pushes you to chuckle and sometimes does not. But again this story is quite old, so, naturally, the comedy here will also be a bit outdated.

This, however, does nothing to diminish the charm this anime has and delivers an entertaining watch till the end. If you are into the classics, you will love this one just like me. So I would advise everyone to watch it for the culture and not for something extraordinary.

Verdict

Hands down a delightful and fun episode that taps into anime tropes but still manages to be unique. I loved how consistently good the animation is and how well they are using their colours. Till now, I am satisfied with the way things are going, and hopefully, it will just get better in the future.

Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
