Urusei Yatsura Episode 11 Review and Recap – A Special New Year Party

Urusei Yatsura is back again with another episode that surely went beyond my expectations in terms of absurdity and sheer randomness. The moment the episode starts, we see an ox cart getting driven somewhere. Because a cart like this already appeared in the anime, with which Mendo’s mother came to visit the school, it is not hard to guess who it might be. You can already tell it must be someone from the Mendo family who is again out with such a weird ride.

The girl inside the carriage gets bored and purposefully lets her handkerchief fly towards our protagonist, Ataru, who at that time was walking down the road with Lum. Ataru quickly recognises that the hanky belongs to a woman by smelling it. Following the smell, he even reaches the carriage and returns the hanky to its rightful owner while trying to sneak a peek inside the carriage.

What comes out of the cart is a skeleton hand, scaring Ataru, Lum and others, who quickly escape. At school, Ataru tells this entire story to Mendo, and he suspects that he might know who is behind this.

During lunch, the culprit comes to Ataru’s school. The girl from the ox carriage introduces herself as Mendo’s fiance and sends the entire class into a frenzy. But it is only later Mendo reveals it is just his little sister Ryoko, who loves to prank others for her own entertainment.

Ataru takes this opportunity to approach her and even manages to get her attention as she too, accepts his advances. He then gets invited to the New Year’s party at Mendo’s house along with Lum, Shinobu, Benten, Oyuki, etc. But, this seemingly simple party turns into a literal mess as the real game begins after everyone enters the house.

If you thought this anime showed its randomness in the previous episodes, then reconsider, as the last bit here was complete chaos. The daughter of the Mendo family literally turns Ataru and his friends into a board game for her fun.

Verdict

All in all, it was a satisfactory watch where we got to see another new character who is definitely quirky enough to hold your attention. But at the same time, the situations are becoming more and more bizarre. It might be a bit too much for the audience to follow the flow of the story at times. Watch the anime on HIDIVE if you haven’t yet.
