Unlocked Ending Explained: Does Na-mi Defeat Her Dangerous Pursuer?

Unlocked (스마트폰을 떨어뜨렸을 뿐인데) is a thriller film written and directed by Kim Tae-joon and stars Chun Woo-hee, Yim Si-wan, Kim Hie-won and Park Ho-san, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 117 minutes.

Unlocked Ending Explained: Who Was the Antagonist?

As it turns out, at the end of the movie, the antagonist was someone who was never registered at birth. Thus, we never really learn his real identity. But, by the movie’s end, it’s clear that he was using Jun-yeong’s identity to commit these murders. Na-mi would’ve been his 9th, as depicted in his notes, but it was foiled thanks to her quick thinking and the police’s somewhat swift action. Unfortunatley, Jun-yeong was the murderer’s first victim, and he probably drowned him as well and took over his life in order to disappear if caught.

Why Did the Stalker Choose Na-mi?

Although his motives were unclear, it might be just because Na-mi was unlucky enough to leave her phone on the bus that first night. Had she not lost her phone, maybe the stalker would’ve gone after someone else. It might just be random because he clearly also went after Jun-yeong, and it doesn’t seem like he had a pattern of some kind.

Did Na-mi Defeat Her Stalker?

Na-mi was able to defeat her stalker after she was ambushed by him… or so the stalker thought. As it turns out, it was all a part of her plan, and he had told the officers that if she texted instead of called, then they needed to get to her ASAP. The stalker didn’t know this and made her text the officers. When they arrive at her father’s house, Na-mi is left shocked to learn that her father has been held captive at home and is being slowly drowned.

She agrees to do whatever the stalker says so that he will release her father. But unfortunately, he ties her up as well and drowns her in the tub with her father. Fortunately for her, the police get there just in time to save them both and frustrated, Na-mi shoots her attacker. He doesn’t die, though and is taken into custody.

What Was in the Apartment Where Ji-man Went in the Beginning?

When Ji-man first realised that his son might be after the several murder cases popping up around him, he finds out where his son has been staying in the present and goes to his apartment when he isn’t home, then unaware that the person he was searching for wasn’t his son. In the apartment, he finds the stalker’s notes on his victims, several cell phones and a whole lot of other stuff, proving that he is up to no good. Unfortunately, the stalker lures him out and takes him on a wild goose chase, taking the time to destroy everything in the apartment in the meantime.

What’s With the Peach Trees?

Ji-man and Jun-yeong had planted a peach tree deep in the forest in the mountains when the latter was young. It was meant to be a secret between the two. He used a very specific plant fertiliser bottle for the tree, which cropped up in one of the crime scenes that Ji-man investigates in the present. The stalker is apparently really into peaches, just like Jun-yeong.
