Tyler Perry’s Duplicity Review

It feels like every day I watch something of Tyler Perry’s on some streaming platform or another. This time, Perry tackles racism in Duplicity where Fela’s husband’s shocking murder leaves the entire city angry. Of course, there’s more to the story than meets the eye and the film slowly opens up and gives us several delicious twists and turns.

Listen, Duplicity isn’t the best film out there and neither is it impactful. But it’s surprisingly watchable which Kat Graham does a fantastic job of carrying on her shoulders. The film’s dialogues are sort of cringy sometimes and the editing really leaves a lot to be desired but the basic storyline is quite entertaining and thoroughly watchable. As with all of Perry’s shows, the film goes from 0 to 100 within a matter of minutes in the end, giving us an insane finale that most will find thoroughly delightful.

I think the film’s trajectory is quite good, it’s not boring and holds on its mystery well. Other than the problems I mentioned above, it’s acted quite well and brings for a convoluted story. Some of the sequences are cliched, but it’s mostly enjoyable and some twists come out of left field. Is it believable? Not very much, but it’s entertaining regardless. It’s one of those guilty pleasures that you will enjoy watching with friends on a Friday night that will leave you amused. I think Graham is the best part of this movie which has low stakes and doesn’t try to do anything beyond delivering a shock factor.

I think the film does a decent job of bringing racial killings to light while simultaneously bringing forth that not all white people are the enemy. I don’t know whether we want to scream about some white men not being racist but hey, Marley does say that both of these things can and do exist together so that counts for something. Either way, I don’t think the film is trying to make some big statement although it does make us think somewhat.

Final Thoughts

Duplicity is an entertaining film that brings out some shocking twists and turns to keep us entertained. However, it’s not a particularly memorable film because it doesn’t do anything that is worth remembering. The acting is great, especially from Kat Graham, but the dialogues and the editing are just so hilariously silly sometimes that it takes away what little impact the film is supposed to make. Either way, this one’s a dramatic one-time watch!
